Chilton, William E. (William Edwin), 1858-1939

Scrapbooks, correspondence, business papers, and memorabilia of a prominent Charleston family that were long time owners of the Charleston Gazette. There are papers of W. E. Chilton, Sr., and for his son and grandson, W. E. Chilton, Jr. and W. E. Chilton, III. The papers of Chilton senior include some correspondence, but mostly land papers documenting the coal mining district in Webster and Braxton Counties. There are also scrapbooks, and contracts pertaining to the family newspaper business; and volumes on the education of W. E. Chilton, Jr. at Woodberry, VA Forest School, and at Yale. The military service of the Chiltons is documented by the service papers, photographs, and other material for W. E. Chilton, Jr. and W. E. Chilton, III in World War (WWI) I and World War II (WWII) respectively.

Clark family
The correspondence of Clark family members, mainly that of Frank Wells Clark and Friend E. Clark. Frank Wells Clark was a student at West Virginia University and Harvard Law School and later established a law practice at New Martinsville. Friend E. Clark was a student at West Virginia University and Johns Hopkins University and later taught chemistry at State College, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia University. Included are the letters of Friend Clark when he traveled to Europe where in 1908 he was visiting professor at the University of Berlin. Cities and places he visited were Berlin, Florence, Gibraltar, Gottingen, Munich, Naples, Rome, Venice and Vienna. There is his professional correspondence as a West Virginia University chemistry professor which covers his recommendations to colleagues, businesses, and stockholders about technical matters. Also there are presentations on New Martinsville, Kanawha Valley, West Virginia and chemistry. Included is the correspondence of Mrs. Friend E. Clark in her capacity as an officer and member of the Crippled Children's Society containing fundraising letters, statistics, organizational bylaws, and constitutions. Correspondents include Franklin D. Roosevelt, John W. Davis, William G. Conley, and H. Guy Kump.

Family genealogies and correspondence for Ruth Woods and Arthur S. Dayton. Includes estate records and Photographs for the Jarvis, Stickler, Dayton, Bosworth, and Woods families. Personal correspondence with and/or pertaining to the Rare Book Room at West Virginia University, World Wars I and II, John W. Draper, West Virginia Wesleyan College, and Dayton Park in Philippi, West Virginia. Also included are research and writings by both Ruth and Arthur Dayton. Newspaper headlines are stored unfolded in an oversize flat storage box; they include: 1. Charleston Gazette, 1944/06/06, D-Day invasion; 2. Charleston Gazette, 1945/05/07, surrender of Nazi Germany; 3. Charleston Gazzette, 1945/08/14, surrender of Japan. Main topics include West Virginia University-related material, including Bond's involvement in Phi Sigma Kappa; genealogy on several early West Virginia families, including Bond, Dent, Core, McWhorter, Romine, Hiner, Scott, Maxson, and Cutright; materials relating to several West Virginia-specific projects, including the Hacker's Creek Descendants, the Henry McWhorter cabin at Jackson's Mill, and others; World War II memorabilia, including letters home from New Guinea and photographs; Morgantown history, particularly from ca. 1914-1970, including Morgantown High School (both 1914-1918 and 1934-1938) and plays produced at the high school in the late 1930s. Easton, Jason Clark, 1892-1972
Lecture notes, clippings, notes, and drafts for A History of European Civilization, Volume 1, and other miscellaneous papers of Jason C. Easton, former professor of history at West Virginia University (WVU). The collection also contains Dr. Easton's correspondence with several former students serving in the military during World War II dating from ca. 1942-1946. Other WWII items include ration books for food, gasoline, and liquor; and two unpublished sound recordings on disc of a radio discussion by J.C. Easton and Clark Ennis regarding the question of which nation the United States should support following World War II, Germany or Russia. There is also an album of photographs, some indentified, of members of the Young family of Charleston, West Virginia, dating from ca. 1860-1890. Addenda to the collection, in two document cases, include Lieutenant Clark Easton's World War I ledger containing class notes and instructional material from an Army Intelligence School, for period 30 September 1918 to 9 November 1918; and a listing of WVU students and graduates killed in World War II. Addenda also include items collected by Easton, including three Civil War documents: 1) payment voucher for Captain John D. Young for work on Bateau No. 16 on the Kanawha River (1962), 2)An eulogy/composition regarding "Stonewall Jackson" by Virginia Military Institute cadet, Samuel Francis Atwill (1863) who was mortally wounded at the Battle of New Market on 15 May 1864, and 3) a three-page narrative by unknown soldier regarding Shenandoah Valley campaign (January to July 1864). There is also a history of Charleston and Kanawha County published in 1911. Correspondence, business papers, educational records of a home economics teacher and supervisor who graduated from West Virginia University, attended Chicago and Columbia universities, taught home economics at Morgantown High School, and was supervisor of home economics for the Monongalia County School System. The papers cover: family affairs; schools in West Virginia, Pennsylvania, Michigan, and New York; West Virginia Home Economics Association; National Education Association department of home economics; World War I letters commenting on conditions at Camp Taylor, Kentucky, Camp Lee, Richmond, Virginia; and World War II material on civilian support activities.

Buckles, Frank Woodruff, 1901-2011

Papers of Frank Woodruff Buckles (born Wood Buckles, February 1, 1901 - February 27, 2011), a United States Army corporal and the last surviving American military veteran of World War I. During World War II, he was captured by Japanese forces in the Philippines as a civilian prisoner. After the war, Buckles married in San Francisco and moved to Gap View Farm near Charles Town, West Virginia, where he worked until age 105. Collection includes incoming correspondence, photographs, military records, ephemera from his travels, clippings, notes, magazines, menus, and more. Subjects include Buckles' biography, his interest in genealogy and his local historical society, Chateau Carolands/Remillard, the commemoration of the 25th anniversary of Bataan Day, and more. The collection includes very little material from the World War I era, some materials from World War II, and more materials from Buckles' life after the wars. This collection is minimally processed.
