This is the second accesion of Dr. Callahan's papers and includes the correspondence of Dr. Callahan and various members of the Callahan and Fuloher families, 1869-1956; mauscripts, notes, documents and printed materials used in research, galley proofs, reprints and bibliographical lists of published writings of Dr. Callahan; class room materials, and various WVU. department reports; family diaries and genealogical information.The correspondence includes a letter from Theodore Roosevelt, February 21, 1909, and a letter from John Foster Dulles, January 24, 1956.

Johnson family

Correspondence of Johnson and allied families concerning local church matters and family news, a majority which concerns the descendants of Joseph and William Johnson, the most prominent members of the family. Joseph was the first governor of Virginia from the western part of the state. His brother, William, was the first postmaster at Bridgeport. Noteworthy is a letter to William Johnson dated November 29, 1864, from Mason Hesser a Confederate prisoner at Elmira, New York, during the Civil War. There are genealogical data and articles on the Johnsons, dating from 1801 when they first settled in Bridgeport. In addition, there are programs concerning the Johnson Day Luncheon and Bridgeport Cemetery Dedication sponsored by the City of Bridgeport.

Davis, John W. (John William), 1873-1955

Scrapbooks, diaries, correspondence and papers of the noted lawyer and 1924 presidential aspirant for the Democrats, John W. Davis, kept by his daughter, a famous author, Julia (McDonald) Davis Adams. Noteworthy is a 1948 official publication in tribute to Davis' career as Solicitor General of the United States (1913-1918). There is a typescript copy of his diary recounting his wartime and post-war tenure (1918-1921) as the U.S. ambassador to Great Britain. His letters include some of his candid feelings about the political events of his day such as the New Deal and tributes to his scholarly approach to practicing law from Supreme Court Justices Robert H. Jackson and Felix Frankfurter.

Papers of Lewis Summers, a lawyer, businessman, member of the Virginia House of Delegates, 1817-1818, delegate to the Virginia Constitutional Convention, 1829-1830, and his brother George W., a lawyer in Charleston, a judge, a member of the House of Delegates, 1830-1832, 1834-1836, the U.S. House of Representatives, 1841-1845, a delegate to the Virginia Constitutional Convention of 1850, candidate for governor in 1851, member of the 1861 Peace Convention, and delegate to the Richmond Secession Convention, 1861. Correspondence between the brothers is for the years 1818-1843. There are also business, legal, and family papers, speeches, and an autograph book of George W. while a student at the University of Virginia, 1854-1857. Correspondence, school themes and programs. The correspondence addressed to Lucy Bayard (later Keys) is from friends and relatives and covers scattered dates from 1871 to 1932. The letters are written primarily from and to Rice's Landing and Beaver (Pennsylvania), and Morgantown (West Virginia), discussing personal and family affairs. The school themes are unsigned, on the subjects "Old Maids," "Decision," "Thought Culture," "Institutes," and "An Aim in Life." The school programs are from Washington and Jefferson College, Waynesburg College, and California State Normal School, all in southwestern Pennsylvania.

Ballard, Margaret B. (1900-1976)
Papers of Dr. Margaret Byrnside Ballard (1900-1991), regarding the history of Monroe County, West Virginia, and the Ballard family. As a genealogist and author of local history, she was an avid collector of the historical materials contained in this collection, most of which relate to her family and Monroe County. The collection includes personal papers, business records, historical and genealogical research material, scrapbooks, bibles, memorabilia, artifacts, photographs, broadsides, paintings, and postage stamps. Maxwell family
Papers of Hu Maxwell (1860-1927), historian, editor, and author of several county histories of West Virginia, along with papers and records of other family members. There are manuscripts of fiction, verse, and local history written by Maxwell, as well as a number of his manuscripts and publications dealing with forestry which were prepared while he was a member of the Forest Service of the United States Department of Agriculture. Maxwell kept a diary during the years 1901-1919 while residing in Morgantown, Chicago, Illinois, and Washington, D.C., which is extensive for the period of World War I and which contains notes on the diary of Rufus Maxwell (1855-1907).
