This collection consists of photograph albums, diplomas, and papers that document the life of John E. Townes. The photos depict both his VMI cadetship and his subsequent career in the United States Army Coast Artillery Corps (1908-1920) and at VMI as a faculty member (1921-1956).

The John L. Nau III Civil War History Collection (1806-1988, bulk 1861-1865; 133 cubic feet) contains Civil War-era correspondence, service records, pension records, artifacts, photographs, military records (including orders, requisitions, and correspondence), currency, newspapers, and other print materials.

The Kenneth S. Purdie papers (approximately 250 items) include:

• Subject files concerning the publication of the 1912 VMI yearbook, of which Purdie was editor
• Personal correspondence
• Documents (1916) concerning the Culver Military Academy, Indiana
• Military service records (photocopies)
• One photograph album (1911-1913) that includs photos of VMI and Wentworth Military Academy, Missouri

Letters, legal and business documents, photographs and news clippings of Maud Miller Buxton and associated families of Miller, Buxton and Ditterick. Maud Miller was born in North Dakota and eventually moved to McMinnville, Oregon via Minnesota. Correspondence spans her early childhood through her marriage to Henry Thurston Buxton and Frank Ditterick. Most letters concern family news. Includes commencement invitations, marriage invitations and clippings of marriage announcements and obituaries. The photograph album appears to cover the 1920's. Loose photographs appear to be members of her family and are undated. A small group of letters to her father, Malcom Miller, is included.

Photograph album, circa 1910-1919, of an unidentified resident of Hampton, Virginia. Pictures are primarily of African Americans and include shots of teachers in a summer program at Hampton Institute, a man in a baseball uniform, formal posed pictures, a trip to Alabama, tobacco leaves, and of the teachers and students of the Lott Carey School, among many others. Some photographs have notations beside them, while the majority do not. Names recorded are S. Vaughn, R. Whiting, L. Bass, S. Bass, M. Bass, Felix, Bertha, Herman, Maggie, and Renard Brown of Norfolk. L. Meyers appears in at least two photos. The photograph album may have belonged to Ruffin P. Boulding and his family, but further research would be necessary to verify.

This material contains images of racist imagery. The purpose of this note is to allow users to decide whether they need or want to view these materials. This collection includes a photograph album compiled from 1910 to 1913 documenting the Randolph-Macon Woman's College, now called Randolph College, in Lynchburg, Virginia. It contains approximately 274 photos, mainly measuring 3 1/4 x 5 1/2 inches and smaller, with some small panoramas. All photographs have numbers written in silver ink, and many are captioned. The creator of the album is unknown. This album features pasted, dated, and captioned photographs documenting student life. The pictures include images of sports events, Greek life, many themed parties, including Dutch, Spanish, and Chinese parties -- the latter with a photo of Sieu-tsung Lok, the first Asian student from China. There are photos of organized events like May Day, Field Day, and graduation celebrations. Also captured are a variety of plays put on by the students. There are also two photographs of an unidentified Black man who may have been a porter at the college. There are also landscapes around Virginia and exterior shots of the campus buildings. One page of photographs titled "Milestones, 1913" contains two photos of students in blackface.

The collection consists of bound volumes, journals, daybooks, and notebooks belonging to John Scott, Richard Marshall Scott,Sr., Richard Marshall Scott,Jr., James L. Gunnell, and Dr. Francis M. Gunnell, and a photograph album belonging to Sarah Louise Rittenhouse. Other materials include printed articles about the Bush Hill plantation,a copy of a book, "The Battles of Aldie, Middleburg and Upperville," and genealogical charts, tables and notes.
