The 24 letters are addressed to Mason Mathews, a Lewisburg attorney and father of Governor Henry Mason Mathews and cover the years 1873 until his death in 1878. Another letter to Mathews daughter, Sallie Patton is incomplete. One deed, dated 1836, is witnessed by Mathews as a justice of the peace. Frequent correspondents include: John Echols, John W. Johnston, Walter N. Johnston, and Howard Shriver.

Price family
Family papers, periodicals, newspapers, clippings, maps, and other materials of the Price family in Marlinton. Most of the papers are those of Andrew Price, a Marlinton attorney, including records of the law firm of Price, Osenton and McPeak. Other materials, ca.1901-1949, concern J.W. Price, a Marlinton physician. There are muster rolls of Company C, Sixty-second Virginia Infantry, C.S.A., from Pendleton County; and manuscripts of essays, verse, and historical articles written by Andrew Price.

Correspondence of William A. Harrison, a Clarksburg lawyer, assistant federal district attorney, member of the Virginia Assembly, and judge of the Supreme Court of Appeals of West Virginia; most letters are from members of the family to Mrs. Anna Robertson Harrison. Subjects include construction of the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal; Civil War loyalty Oaths, Camp Chase land purchases, and road building. There are also grade school attendance certificates and notes concerning the Lunatic Asylum West of the Allegheny Mountains and Weston State Hospital.

The collection includes correspondence, publications, photographs, and clippings, among other material that documents the personal and business activities of the Holt family. The collection is divided into five series as follows: Dr. Matthew S. Holt Papers (1837-1943), Andrew E. Holt Papers (1926-1958), Ralph K. Chase Papers (1918-1947), Helen Jane Holt Seale Papers (ca. 1930-2008), and Mixed (ca. 1820-2013 and undated).

Price, Samuel, 1805-1884

The papers of a prominent Lewisburg, Greenbrier County lawyer and politician, Samuel Price, who served numerous terms in the Virginia state legislature and was Virginia's Lieutenant-Governor during the Civil War. He was also a delegate to the Virginia Constitutional Convention of 1851, the Secession Convention of 1861, and the West Virginia Constitutional Convention of 1872; and he completed the U. S. Senate term of Allen Caperton in 1876. The papers include correspondence relating to local and state politics, Price's law practice, slavery, the Civil War, land speculation, and railroads. Also included are files and ledgers documenting Price's legal and political activities as well as personal financial records. Among the prominent correspondents are the Civil War generals John Echols and Jubal Early (1872) as well as the following: G. D. Camden, Allen T. Caperton, Charles J. Faulkner, William Parker Foulke, David Goff, Henry M. Mathews, and H. O. Middleton.

Samuel Price, Politician, Papers 0 Linear Feet Summary: 61 pages (photocopies and transcripts)

Price, Samuel, 1805-1884
Includes both transcriptions and photocopies of original manuscripts of Samuel Price's 1828 law license and an 1879 life history from his birth through 1866. Also included are transcriptions of newspaper articles and letters concerning Price's life and death, and his funeral service. Samuel Price was born July 28, 1805. He served as Virginia's Lieutenant-Governor during the Civil War. He was president of the Constitutional Convention of West Virginia in 1872, which framed the present day constitution. He was a member of the Constitutional Convention which passed the ordinance of secession, but he did not vote for or sign the ordinance when it passed. He was also a member of the West Virginia State Legislature and a representative of West Virginia in the United States Senate. Price died February 25, 1884.

Seiler family

This is a collection of letters and documents tracing the personal and business life of an eastern panhandle West Virginia family. The papers concern a broad range of political, social, financial, and legal topics, particularly focusing on J. Hammond Siler, Jr., his parents, J. Hammond Siler, Sr. and Jessie Castleman Siler (residents of the Town of Bath better known as Berkeley Springs). Also includes correspondence and other papers from related families. Subjects include banking, the Civil War, the Episcopal church, secession of Virginia, Virginia Loyalty Oath, women's diaries, and women's letters and papers. A notable item in the collection is the diary of Anne Doyne Wolff Strother, wife of artist and writer David Hunter Strother, documenting a trip with husband and daughter Emily to New Orleans in 1857 (S2/Box 67, folder 1a).

Stuart family

Papers of John and Lewis Stuart, 1785-1823, and of Samuel Price, 1830-1879. Price's papers include mainly legal and business correspondence related to Price's law practice in Lewisburg, West Virginia. The Stuart papers concern settlement in Greenbrier County, land transactions, and family matters. The collection includes lawyer's fee books and account books for general merchandise, ca.1830-1880. There are also printed booklets of court briefs, pamphlets concerning "the slavery question" and railroads, and several Congressional documents.

Correspondence, newspaper clippings, and financial papers of a lawyer and state senator from Kingwood, who was instrumental in the organization of the West Virginia Northern Railroad, and the Kingwood Coal and Coke Company. Subjects include state politics, 1888-1895, Virginia Debt Question, the tariff debate, land development, coal mining and railroads. Correspondents include J.M. Mason, W.E. Chilton, S.B. Elkins, and George C. Sturgiss.
