William and Mary in the Tidewater region of Virginia.  Established as a two year junior college known as the Norfolk Division of the College of William and Mary, the school's mission was to provide educational opportunities to the people of Hampton Roads commensurate with those available near the commonwealth's large university centers.  The \"Division\" as it was known, opened its doors in the empty buildings of the old Larchmont Elementary School, offering a two year course of study allowing students the opportunity to earn transferable credit through the sophomore year to any four year college throughout the United States.  In 1931, courses in basic engineering and other technical studies were offered at the Norfolk Division through collective partnership with Virginia Polytechnic Institute (VPI), taught by instructors directly provided by VPI.  Upon the completion of studies at the Division, many students seeking baccalaureate degrees continued their academic pursuits at either the Williamsburg campus of William and Mary or VPI in Blacksburg, though it was not uncommon for Norfolk Division students to attend other universities throughout the country as well. ","The persistent popularity of instruction offered by the Division resulted in expanded curricula in 1939 that provided vocational or technical training for careers not requiring baccalaureate degrees.  At the onset of World War II, the Norfolk Division focused vocational and technical training through what was known as the War Training Program, designed to support the technical demands of the armed forces in the war effort.  Post war through the 1950s the Division continued to grow offering increased curricula in the fields of music, secretarial science, merchandising, fine arts, and a nurses' training program through affiliation with Norfolk General Hospital.  In 1954, William and Mary approved the Norfolk Division to offer several academic programs leading to baccalaureate degrees and two years later the Division awarded its first four year degrees to fifteen eligible students.  In 1961 the Division earned accreditation as a four year school and in August 1962, became independent of William and Mary and was established by the Virginia General Assembly as Old Dominion College.  In 1969, Old Dominion College became present day Old Dominion University. A sister, Selma Faye Caplan, was born October 10, 1923. In 1963, Caplan married Ruth Kopelove Salasky and became a stepfather to Stanley Jackson Salasky and Marilyn Salasky. Caplan eventually had three step-grandchildren: Stanley's daughter Lauren, and Marilyn's two sons Daniel and Andrew.","Caplan graduated from Maury High School in 1936. He then attended the Norfolk Division of the College of William and Mary/Virginia Polytechnic Institute, now Old Dominion University, graduating in 1938. Caplan completed his education by graduating from the Medical College of Virginia in 1941 with a degree in pharmacy.","After graduating, Caplan worked at Whelan Drugs in Newport News and Norfolk from 1941-1947. Other organizations that Caplan was involved with included the Virginia Jaycees, the Tidewater Chapter of the American Red Cross and the Virginia Zoological and Aquarium Society.","In regard to the development of the City of Norfolk, Caplan was primarily known via his involvement with the Norfolk Port and Industrial Authority (N.P.I.A.), which oversaw the Norfolk International Terminals and Norfolk Municipal Airport, later becoming Norfolk Regional Airport in 1969 and eventually Norfolk International Airport in 1976. From 1962-1987, Caplan served on the N.P.I.A. Board of Commissioners, and was chairman from 1974-1987. During his time on the N.P.I.A. Board of Commissioners, the Norfolk airport grew from a municipal/ regional airport to an international airport. Caplan vehemently opposed the turnover of the Norfolk International Terminals to the Virginia Port Authority and he told the Virginian-Pilot in 1971 \"the surreptitious handling of Norfolk's interest in these matters concerns me, as it should our city fathers, for surely the port is our city's heartbeat.\" Caplan's opposition to the turnover was not successful and, the Norfolk International Terminal, along with terminals in Portsmouth and Newport News, became part of the Virginia Port Authority in July 1972.","For his service with the N.P.I.A. and to the City of Norfolk, Caplan was awarded a Certificate of Appreciation in July of 1987 for \"recognition of valuable and distinguished service on the Norfolk Port and Industrial Authority.\" Two months later, he was honored with a resolution from Norfolk Mayor Joseph A. Leafe that recognized Caplan as an \"advocate of tourism and promotion of the City of Norfolk with regard to the use of air travel,\" and as serving  \"as the Port and Industrial Authority's Representative with the Convention and Visitor's Bureau.\" Caplan was also honored with a bronze plaque in the lobby of Norfolk International Airport.","Other areas of interest for Caplan were city and state politics and religion. In 1974, her father left Thornton and her mother, and would not return to Thornton's life until the early 2000's. Most of Thornton's life from then on was spent in Illinois.","\nAs an adult, Thornton's career has revolved around real estate. She first worked as both a realtor and freelance writer in Alton, Illinois. Later, she and her husband started a small rental property business. She continued to do freelance work, along with her real estate business, and published her first book, \"The Reality of Real Estate\", in 1993.","\nThornton made Sears homes and writing her primary focus and career from that point on. She spent the remainder of the year completing her manuscript for her second book and published it in 2002. While serving as president of the Norfolk County Medical Society, Andrews appointed a bipartisan committee to study the need for a medical school in the area. The study was able to convince the Virginia General Assembly of the need for a new medical school. In 1964 the Eastern Virginia Medical Center authority was formed with the charge of developing the new medical school. Andrews served as the chairman of the authority from 1964-1970. Under his leadership a medical center complex was built in an area that has once been slums. The medical complex now consists of Eastern Virginia Medical School (EVMS), Norfolk General Hospital, Medical Tower, Public Health Department, Children's Hospital of the King's Daughters and Tidewater Rehabilitation Institute. In addition, as chairman of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at EVMS Andrews was instrumental in bringing the team of Drs. Howard and Georgeanna Jones to Norfolk. The Drs. Jones specialized in treating infertility problems. In 1981 they brought notoriety to Norfolk with the role they played in the first successful birth, in the United States, of a baby conceived by in-vitro fertilization. With the success of the in-vitro fertilization program the Jones Institute for Reproductive Medicine was founded in 1983.","Andrews also served on the Norfolk City Council from 1974 to 2000 and as the city's mayor from 1992 to 1994. Godden received his Bachelors and Masters Degrees at Oswego State Teachers College, of the State University of New York.  Godden's educational philosophy integrated the Sheldon Theory of Education. This theory inspired his work toward a practical usage of knowledge, as opposed to symbolic knowledge, as the motivator for students to learn.\t\tGodden worked with the Technical Institute at the College of William and Mary Norfolk Division.  In 1941, the Virginia Polytechnic Institute (VPI) expanded at the Norfolk Division, now Old Dominion University, creating the Technical Institute in 1945.  The Navy and VPI cooperated to service the region's need for technicians, especially in the aircraft fields.  Other courses offered were automotive crafts, drawing and drafting, electricity and circuitry, machine crafts, mathematics, photography, radio and electronics, and refrigeration and surveying. These were two year programs with the exception of electronics which was a three year program.
