After graduating in 1910 he taught briefly at the Chamberlayne School for Boys (now St. Christopher's) in Richmond, VA where he also coached football. In 1913 he attended graduate school at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (Virginia Tech) where he studied animal sciences and taught French. Dr. Lancaster graduated from Virginia Polytechnic in 1915 and shortly thereafter began another graduate studies program at the University of Missouri. He completed this program in 1917 and soon after returned to Virginia Polytechnic as an Associate Professor in the Agricultural College.","In 1923, Dr. Lancaster joined the Virginia State Board of Education and in 1925 he was named Secretary of the State Board of Board of Education and Assistant Superintendent. In 1929 Lancaster took a job as Dean of Men at the University of Alabama and would stay in that position for just over eight years. In the spring of 1937, however, he returned to Virginia and took a position at Sweet Briar College.","Dabney S. Lancaster was appointed by Virginia Governor James H. In 1917 Jeffers graduated from the Methodist College in St. Johns. He left Newfoundland in 1919 to attend Boston University where he earned his B.S. and M.A. degrees. In 1926 he became a professor at the State Teachers College in Farmville, Virginia, where he taught until his retirement in 1968. In 1931 he received his doctorate in marine biology from the University of Toronto. For a period of time during his tenure at Longwood, he served as head of the Department of Natural Sciences. In appreciation of his 42 years of dedication to his profession and his students, the science auditorium in Stevens Hall at Longwood was named in his honor. Dr. Jeffers served as President of the Virginia Academy of Science from 1940 to 1941, and as the Director of Survey for the Chesapeake Bay Fisheries Commission from 1943 to 1945. He was one of the co-founders of the National Association of Biology Teachers. Dr. Jeffers was a contributor of articles published in several scientific journals. He and a colleague, Edith Stevens, collaborated on several texts used in-house by their students. After his retirement from Longwood, Dr. Jeffers wrote a book entitled The Bastards' Book which was published in 1981 by Driftwood Press.","This collection was transferred from Alumni Relations to the Longwood Library for its archival collection in December 1993 by Nancy Shelton, Director of Alumni Relations. Dr. Jeffers' son, Jack Jeffers, had given these papers to Longwood via Alumni Relations.","These items were donated to the Greenwood Library by Dr. Marvin Scott in 2023 who was given them when he took over as the Scinece Department Chair. Personal correspondence is arranged alphabetically by the correspondent's last name. Manuscripts - contains a variety of articles written by Dr. Jeffers and texts of addresses given by Dr. Jeffers. This series also contains a draft (typed, with corrections) of a book written by Dr. Jeffers (The Bastards' Book). Included in this series are bits and pieces of stories written by Dr. Jeffers that appear to be autobiographical. Personal and Biographical Materials - contains a collection of materials that Dr. Jeffers kept with his personal papers and that relate to some aspect of his life and career. Included are a birth certificate, educational information, employment information, newspaper clippings, and a personal notebook. This series also includes scrapbook materials with miscellaneous writings, clippings, and photographs that were significant to Dr. Jeffers. There is also an informal notebook filled with random handwritten notes and typed stories. The notebook is entitled \"Chats with Jarman and More.\" Teaching and research - contains research that Dr. Jeffers used in writing articles, including notes and clippings. This series also includes a variety of miscellaneous print materials dealing with organizations in which Dr. Jeffers was actively involved. purposes.","Rosemary Sprague (1922-1991) was a graduate of Bryn Mawr College and received her master's degree and doctorate from Case Western Reserve University.  She also studied at the Shakespeare Institute, Stratford-on-Avon, and at Oxford University and the University of London.  She taught English at Longwood from 1962 until her retirement in 1990.  She was promoted to full professorship in 1965, and two years later she became Longwood's first Board of Visitors Distinguished Professor.  She was the author of nine historical novels for young adults, biographies of Robert Browning and George Eliot, and a study of five American poets entitled \"Imaginary Gardens.\" Additionally she was the author of the Sesquicentennial History of Longwood College.  Dr. Sprague was an accomplished actress who loved the theatre her entire life.  Prior to teaching at Longwood, she was the Director of Dramatics at Notre Dame College.  In 1971, Dr. Sprague established the Victorians Institute in collaboration with two colleagues from the University of North Carolina.  The Institute has developed into an international literary society.  During her lifetime, she was involved in teaching, writing, acting, professional organizations, and community-based groups; but today, her legacy lives on in her writings that are held in libraries throughout the world.","Dr. Sprague died in the fall of 1991 as the result of a fire in her Farmville home.
