T. Walker Duke 's letters to his
parents from 1908-1911 describe his experiences in
Montana as a cowboy, his interest in
homesteading, bronco riding, and his work as a printer. In
1917, Walker was assigned to the
5th Illinois Company ,
Ft. Sheridan, Illinois . His letters
written during his service in
Europe run from October 1918 to March
1919. After the conclusion of the war, Walker served with the
Judge Advocate General Department in
Washington, D.C. (letters to his parents,
1920-1925)."," Mary Duke 's letters to her parents,
1918-1926, and no date, describe her nursing experiences and
other charitable work in the
Archdeaconry of Southwest Virginia with
Mrs.
Hugh F. It also reveals the financial difficulties of various
family members during the Depression years.","The
Slaughter family correspondence comprises
the fifth subseries of correspondence and contains letters to
and from members of
Edith Slaughter Duke 's family, including
her parents,
Mary Harker and
John Flavel Slaughter, Sr. , and her
brothers and sisters. She
describes her travels in
Europe (May 11, September 19, and 24,
1899); her concern for the
Lee family in
China during the struggle of the
Kuomintang with the warlords for political supremacy (March
29, 1927); her trip to
Mexico (July 25, 1928) and the
Middle East (November 4, 1935).","Most of the Slaughter correspondence concerns either
business matters or family news with a few exceptions.
Charles Slaughter, Sr. writes concerning a
strike and riot in
Duluth, Minnesota (July 7, 1889);
Charles M. Harker, Sr. describes the
meeting of the American Convention (
Know-Nothing Party ) in
Philadelphia (June 10, 1855); Mary B[?]
R[?]'s letters, 1861-1862, provide a woman's view of the Civil
War; and
Samuel Slaughter describes his trip to
Ireland ,
Scotland , and
England (July 24, August 1 & 5, 1889).
Members of the
Garland family write concerning family news,
Dr.
[Erasmus] Darwin 's theory of the earth,
and the significance of fossils, and General Hull's activities
at
Sandwich in
Canada during the beginning of the War of
1812 (August 4, 1812); and a trip to
Boston and
Montreal (August 1 & 11, 1851).","Of note among the miscellaneous correspondence are two
letters from
John Singleton Mosby , one to
R. They ran a hospital and
dispensary from 1908 until ca. 1947. Although their letters
reveal various aspects of missionary life and personal family
news, they contain little of Chinese events. One letter by
Claude Lee (October 13, 1918) speaks of
the participation of the
8th Czecho-Slovak Regiment in a battle
against the Bolsheviks in the
Ural Mountains near
[Tagelove ?], Russia , during World War
I.","The last subseries of correspondence consists of topical
files concerning the American Legion and World War I; business
correspondence of
R. Also included are the records of
the continuation of these activities in a business operated by
R. Holt Easley, son of James. Easley. The records of the
general merchandising business are contained chiefly in day
books/ journals, journals and ledgers. They include the names
of wholesale suppliers and customers, and detail the variety
of goods handled. The records of Easley's land speculations
dominate the collection and include correspondence, maps,
registers of various land records, receipts, bonds, deeds, tax
lists and accounts. They are to be found throughout the
manuscript material and the bound ledgers. The land records
begin in 1853 and continue through 1904. Business was
conducted with Iowa land agents such as Weare and Allison,
W.J. Barney and Co., E.S. Hedges, J.P. and J.N. Casady, and
Casady and Test as well as agents in Kansas, Wisconsin,
Missouri, Illinois, and Nebraska. Brief references to a
milling enterprise are included in a receipt (Banister Mills,
1881) and in several business letters (1903--1904).
","
Beginning in 1879 all records, including those of the land
speculation, reflect the adjustments necessitated by Easley's
death. Records of R. Holt Easley's management of the business
can be found in both the manuscript material and the bound
ledgers, beginning ca. 1882. The collection contains
references to the existence of lead in Iowa, the influence of
new railroads, and problems resulting from the Civil War in
relation to the Easley and his successors of Halifax Court
House [now Halifax], Virginia.","James S. Easley was born in 1802 in Pittsylvania County,
Virginia. With various associates, he sold general merchandise
in Halifax Court House , Virginia, and speculated in
mid-western lands. Mr. Easley died in 1879. Over the years
James Easley's businesses were conducted by a variety of the
following associates, executors and successors: Easley and
Willingham; W.W. Willingham; Easley, Holt and Co.; Easley,
Carrington and Co.; Samuel W. Holt; Easley and Hurt; R. Holt
Easley, Wood Boudin, Jr. and Banister Mills.","The collection includes the records of merchandising
business, land speculation, a milling enterprise and the
settling of Easley's estate. Also included are the records of
the continuation of these activities in a business operated by
R. Holt Easley, son of James. Easley. The records of the
general merchandising business are contained chiefly in day
books/ journals, journals and ledgers. They include the names
of wholesale suppliers and customers, and detail the variety
of goods handled. The records of Easley's land speculations
dominate the collection and include correspondence, maps,
registers of various land records, receipts, bonds, deeds, tax
lists and accounts. They are to be found throughout the
manuscript material and the bound ledgers. The land records
begin in 1853 and continue through 1904. Business was
conducted with Iowa land agents such as Weare and Allison,
W.J. Barney and Co., E.S. Hedges, J.P. and J.N. Casady, and
Casady and Test as well as agents in Kansas, Wisconsin,
Missouri, Illinois, and Nebraska. Brief references to a
milling enterprise are included in a receipt (Banister Mills,
1881) and in several business letters (1903--1904).","Beginning in 1879 all records, including those of the land
speculation, reflect the adjustments necessitated by Easley's
death. Records of R. Holt Easley's management of the business
can be found in both the manuscript material and the bound
ledgers, beginning ca. 1882. The collection contains
references to the existence of lead in Iowa, the influence of
new railroads, and problems resulting from the Civil War in
relation to the
