Easley and his successors of Halifax Court\n House [now Halifax], Virginia.","James S. Easley was born in 1802 in Pittsylvania County,\n Virginia. With various associates, he sold general merchandise\n in Halifax Court House , Virginia, and speculated in\n mid-western lands. Mr. Easley died in 1879. Over the years\n James Easley's businesses were conducted by a variety of the\n following associates, executors and successors: Easley and\n Willingham; W.W. Willingham; Easley, Holt and Co.; Easley,\n Carrington and Co.; Samuel W. Holt; Easley and Hurt; R. Holt\n Easley, Wood Boudin, Jr. and Banister Mills.","The collection includes the records of merchandising\n business, land speculation, a milling enterprise and the\n settling of Easley's estate. Also included are the records of\n the continuation of these activities in a business operated by\n R. Holt Easley, son of James. Easley. The records of the\n general merchandising business are contained chiefly in day\n books/ journals, journals and ledgers. They include the names\n of wholesale suppliers and customers, and detail the variety\n of goods handled. The records of Easley's land speculations\n dominate the collection and include correspondence, maps,\n registers of various land records, receipts, bonds, deeds, tax\n lists and accounts. They are to be found throughout the\n manuscript material and the bound ledgers. The land records\n begin in 1853 and continue through 1904. Business was\n conducted with Iowa land agents such as Weare and Allison,\n W.J. Barney and Co., E.S. Hedges, J.P. and J.N. Casady, and\n Casady and Test as well as agents in Kansas, Wisconsin,\n Missouri, Illinois, and Nebraska.
