Culin Family Papers, \n 1856-1924",".","Collection is arranged in 5 folders.\n","John Cleburne Culin (1834-1890) was a native of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and came to Charlottesville, Virginia before the Civil War. He was a tailor by trade.  He married Sarah F. Farish (1829-1916) on 16 April 1857. During the Civil War he was a Captain of Company A, 19th Virginia Infantry. He was wounded seven times during the war and lost a leg during the Battle of Five Forks and was taken prisoner. He lived the rest of his life in Charlottesville.\n","John and Sarah were the parents of Charles E. (1858-1917), Lewis (1860-), Robert E. (1867-1944), and John Cleburne (1871-1918). John Cleburne Culin II was also tailor and lived in Charleston, South Carolina and Charlottesville, Virginia. He married Lilian Molter. His son, John Cleburne Culin III (1896-1918), served in the 116th Infantry during World War I and was killed in France on 17 October 1918. He is buried in the Meuse-Argonne American Cemetery, Romagne, France.\n","These papers relate to the family and descendants of John Cleburne Cullin (1834-1890). Of particular interest are the letters of John C. Culin III, written from France during World War I to his mother Lilian Culin.\n","Folder 1: Includes the Civil War military record of John C.
