In the fall of 1861, Nelson\n         attended a school in \n          Richmond, Virginia , run by \n          Heath J. Christian . Most of the letters\n         to Nelson were written to him from his mother and father, and\n         brother Frank, while he was away at school, first at\n         Christian's and then at the \n          Virginia Military Institute , which he\n         entered in August of 1863. These letters contain news of life\n         and events during the Civil War. Nelson's father, \n          Callender St. George Noland , served as\n         Commandant of the battery at \n          Mulberry Island Point defending the \n          James River . In his letter January 12,\n         1862, \n          Callender Noland mentions receiving three\n         dispatches telling him to look for the enemy, who he wishes\n         would come up and fight or else go on out to sea, and being on\n         board one of the two steamers stationed near the battery to\n         protect the \n          James River .","Other letters to Nelson mention: selling barrels of corn\n         and stacks of fodder to the Quartermaster (January 16, 1862);\n         death of an old slave, \n          Fanny (January 27, 1863); Dr. \n          Richard Berkeley (1819-?) accepting the\n         position of assistant surgeon under Dr. Wiley in the \n          Confederate Army and several social\n         gatherings involving General Pendleton's staff and Captain\n         Kirkpatrick's Company, and the presence of General [Stuart] at\n         the wedding of Dr. Fontaine after a ride of forty miles\n         (February 14, 1863); and the progress of Nelson at school and\n         his hopes of entering \n          Virginia Military Institute (August 1,\n         1863).","Other letters include: news of Colonel Norborne (1823-1911)\n         and Major \n          William Noland [Berkeley] (1826-1907),\n         prisoners of war in a hospital in \n          Baltimore, Maryland , and Captain \n          Charles [Fenton Berkeley] (1832-?), a\n         prisoner at \n          Sandusky, Ohio (August 17, 1863); the\n         selling of \n          \"Endfield\" (August 18, and December 3,\n         1863); the movement of the Army of Northern Virginia to\n         Tennessee in preparation for a great battle (September 10,\n         1863); the construction of an ice pond, and mention of Colonel\n          Norborne Berkeley at \n          Johnson's Island (January 4, 1864); the\n         scarcity of eggs at home, runaway slaves, and difficulty in\n         slave management (January 18, 1864); a fox chase (February 4,\n         1864); the hiding of all but one of the horses at \n          \"Airwell\" and the \"capture\" of a \"fine\n         Yankee horse\" with a cavalry saddle, lost during the raid upon\n          Richmond by the Federal forces of Col. \n          Ulric Dahlgren and General \n          Judson Kilpatrick , who had passed the\n         house on February 28th (March 5, 1864); the\n         Kilpatrick-Dahlgren raid on \n          Richmond , short food rations of the\n         Confederate soldiers in the city and the high cost of food for\n         the city dwellers of \n          Richmond (March 9, 1864); his parents\n         replies to Nelson's proposed resignation from VMI (March 30\n         and April 2, 1864); Frank's reference to the participation of\n         the VMI Cadets at the Battle of \n          New Market (June 7, 1864); the mention of\n         a cockfight, and \n          Nick Carter 's band of outlaws (July 10,\n         1865); a description of a military school in \n          Aiken, South Carolina , by Cadet \n          Wharton Sinkler (November 8, [ca.\n         1861-1865]); and a suggestion to seek employment at a foundry\n         in \n          Baltimore or \n          Philadelphia (September 10, 1866).","Nelson's adult correspondence includes the following\n         subjects: the murder of \n          George O'Connor , City Marshall of \n          Leadville, Colorado (May 7, 1878); a\n         discussion about dissolving his business partnership with \n          G.T. McDonald in \n          Kokomo, Colorado (February 17, 1882); the\n         claim of Lt. \n          Callender Noland against the United States\n         Government for three months pay for services in the Mexican\n         War (May 15, 1882); and the claim of \n          Nelson Noland against the government of \n          Peru (August 2, 1888).","Beginning in 1889, Nelson's correspondence is mainly about\n         proposed business deals with the Philadelphian architects \n          Walter Cope , and \n          John and E.L. Stewardson , especially the\n         purchase of the \n          Newmarket Property, which contained a\n         quarry site of red granite. The early correspondence also\n         discussed a possible wheel and wagon factory, water power\n         estimates for the property and other calculations, and the\n         possibilities of business in the \"new South\" (August 8,\n         October 31, November 9, 16, 23, 25, and December 26,\n         1889).","In 1890, Cope wrote Noland concerning: an option on the \n          Hanover Junction property (January 2); the\n         possibility of a silk mill (January 19); a description of the\n         property Noland and Cope wished to purchase (June 23); an\n         interest in the \n          North Anna property (July 7); the terms\n         for \n          D.G. Bibb 's Mill property (November 17);\n         the need for secrecy in purchasing Bibb's property (November\n         19); the terms to accept \n          William C. Anderson into the partnership\n         with Noland, Cope, and the Stewardsons (November 21); and the\n         arrangements concerning the quarry and granite company to be\n         constructed upon the \n          Newmarket property close to the \n          Verdon Railroad Station (January 29, and\n         May 6, 1891).","Other topics include: \n          F.L. Galt about the opportunities in the \n          Amazon and \n          Andes regions (February 4, 1903); \n          Fannie V. Candler 's reference to \n          Theodore Roosevelt 's invitation to \n          Booker T. Washington to dine in the White\n         House and its effect upon the South in an election year (July\n         3, 1904); concessions from the Peruvian government for\n         explorations in \n          Peru for the purpose of extracting\n         minerals, especially gold (May 8, 1906); genealogical data\n         concerning Dr. \n          [Richard ?] Berkeley 's descendants, and \n          Edgewood , built ca. 1796 (April 3, 1907);\n         news of \"old \n          Amazon friends\" (July 16 \u0026: 18, 1907);\n         and a discussion of the possible sale of the \n          \"Edgewood\" and \n          \"Airwell\" properties with \n          Thomas Nelson Page (n.d.).","Letters to \n          William Churchill Noland","Frank Noland writes from \n          Comanche, Texas , to his brother with\n         tales of the \"wild West\" (June 4, and December 3, 1876); Other\n         topics and correspondents include: William's Civil Service\n         examination and a position in the \n          Office of Supervising Architect, Treasury\n         Department (May 17 and July 9, 1889); \n          Edward E. Hendrickson 's training of\n         architectural draftsmen at the \n          Spring Garden Institute , \n          Philadelphia (September 13, 1893); \n          Thomas Nelson Page concerning plans for an\n         addition to his \n          Oakland House in \n          Hanover County and later modifications to\n         lower costs (August 15 and September 22, 1893); a proposed\n         trip to \n          Penzance, England , to visit \n          William R. Whitmore who asks him to\n         procure some Confederate stamps for his son (May 5, 1894); \n          Frank Noland and models of his invention,\n         a \"bug machine\" (May 22, 1894); \n          John Stewardson (May 30, 1894); William's\n         discharge from the architectural firm of \n          M.J. Dimmock due to hard times (June 19,\n         1894); \n          Francis P. Berkeley 's discussion of the\n         collapse of one of the roofs in the \n          Rotunda during its rebuilding and the\n         coroner's investigation into the resultant death of one of the\n         workmen, with a sketch of the Rotunda and a newsclipping about\n         the accident (October 21 \u0026: 25, 1896); \n          Hilary P. News items include: Nelson's\n         appointment as Deputy U.S. Mineral Surveyor and a description\n         of trapping (February 17, 1876); a request that each child\n         keep a personal journal for their descendants, in response to\n         the nation's centennial (February 25, 1876); the lack of\n         opportunity in \n          California for Southern gentlemen\n         (February 29, 1876); widespread interest in baseball in \n          Hanover County (March 31, 1876); the long\n         lasting negative effects of the Civil War upon the state of \n          Virginia (April 12, 1876); Nelson's\n         promotion to Chief Engineer of the Mines at \n          Sts. John, Summit County, Colorado (May 5,\n         1876); home medical remedies (May 12, 1876); the suggestion\n         that Frank go into journalism or find work in the \n          Gainsville, Alabama area, near his Uncle \n          Charles [Noland] (June 21, 1876); an\n         enclosed letter from Nelson describing the mining operations\n         in \n          Sts. John, Colorado (August 15, 1876);\n         description of the staff of the \n          Ashland News (September 30, 1876); a discussion of the\n         presidential election of 1876, feelings of political\n         instability in \n          Ulysses S. Grant 's administration and the\n         U.S. Government, and suggested reading material for self\n         improvement (November 13 and December 4, 1876); and efforts to\n         return Frank to \n          Virginia to work (February 15, 1877).","Miscellaneous correspondence includes: the pedigrees of\n         several horses (September 15, 1837); a copy of \n          John Bankhead Magruder 's (1810-1871)\n         reply to \n          Callender Noland 's request to turn over\n         the battery and stores at \n          Mulberry Island Point to the Senior\n         Officer on duty at \n          Fort [Powhatan ?] and return to the Army\n         of the Peninsula (November 17, 1861); a letter from General \n          F.H. Smith at the \n          Virginia Military Institute (November 25,\n         1863); and a description of an attack by the Army of the\n         Potomac upon the house at \n          \"Dewberry\" and the surrounding area en\n         route to \n          Richmond, Virginia (May 31 and [June]\n         1864).","The second series of papers contains miscellaneous business\n         and legal papers of the \n          Noland family .
