The disclosure of personally identifiable information pertaining to a living individual may have legal consequences for which the College of William and Mary assumes no responsibility.","This collection is arranged into five series: Series 1: Scrapbooks, 1990-1998; Series 2: Audiovisual Material, 1990-2000; Series 3: Photographs, 1990-2000; Series 4: Administrative Records, 1990-2005; and Series 5: Publicity Material, 1990-2006.","The Gentlemen of the College, a men's a cappella group at the College of William and Mary, was organized in January 1990 and formally recognized by the Office of Student Activities in November 1990. Founding members identified in a photograph taken in Fall 1990 include Doug Stambler, class of 1992, and Michael Fitch, class of 1993. As of December 2007, the group remains active on campus and is the oldest men's a cappella group at the College of William and Mary. The group performs live many times throughout the academic year. Performances are both on and off campus in the Williamsburg area in addition to their annual spring tour and any competitions in which they compete throughout the year. The group performs barbershop standards in addition to more modern tunes with traditional a cappella arrangements. Typically the group will consist of anywhere from 10-15 members. Their performances are known for lively antics during the songs and the comedy skits performed between numbers. Every academic year ends with a Gentlemen of the College final concert in Phi Beta Kappa Hall. He studied at the University of Kansas and the University of Durham in Durham, England before earning his MD in June 1965 from the University of Kansas. He also received an MA from the University of Cambridge in 2002. His postgraduate medical training was done at Johns Hopkins Hospital (1965-1967) and at the Duke University Medical Center under Dr. David Sabiston, Jr. from 1969 to 1972. He spent a year from 1972-1973 at the Institute of Medicine, National Academies in Washington DC. His military service was as a clinical associate, Surgery Branch at the National Heart Institute at the National Institutes of Health from 1967-1969 and as a surgeon with the U.S. Public Health Service from 1972-1973.\n","\nDr. Detmer served a joint appointment in preventative medicine and surgery at the University of Wisconsin-Madison where he was assistant professor (1973-1977), associate professor (1977-1980), and professor (1980-1984). From 1996-1998, he was the Senior Vice President at the University, also lecturing as a professor in health policy, health sciences policy, surgery, and health evaluation sciences until 1999. \n","\n\nFrom 1999-2004, Dr. Detmer was the Dennis Gillings Professor of Health Management at Cambridge University and is a lifetime member of Clare Hall College, Cambridge. From 2005-2015, he was a visiting professor at the Centre for Health Informatics and Multi-professional Education, University College London.\n","\n\nDr. Detmer's professional activities include working with the American Medical Informatics Association, the China Medical Board of New York, the Friends of the National Library of Medicine, the Institute of Medicine, the American Association of Medical Colleges, and the Nuffield Trust.  He additionally served as the Chair of the Board of Regents at the National Library of Medicine, the Chair of the Board on Health Care Services at the IOM/NAM, and like Kerr White and John Ashley before him, as Chair of the National Committee on Vital and Health Statistics. His professional affiliations, memberships, honors and awards were many. He served on editorial boards; advisory groups in the US and the UK; on government boards and committees; and as a consultant to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services; the U.S. Congress; to the states of New York, Virginia, and Wisconsin; and to various universities and foundations. He is a frequent visiting lecturer, both national and internationally. His bibliography has nearly 200 entries and includes articles related to surgery, health policy, physician assistants, computer-based patient records, physician workforce, medical informatics, quality of health care, and the academic health center. \n","\n\nHe was married to Mary Helen McFerson (1939-2018) and has two daughters. In October 2024, he married Sharon Hauff.\n","In the weeding process duplicates of reprints and speeches were discarded. Bills, receipts, and personal financial information documents were shredded. Several documents were moved to UVA Medical Center records. Most of the correspondence, speeches, talks, chapter articles, and reprints were organized by date into bulky notebooks. The order was retained but the notebooks were discarded. In 1977, the Virginia Opera began performances in Richmond with the encouragement of then-Governor Mills Godwin and Mrs. T. Fleetwood (Anna) Garner who helped form the Richmond Friends of the Opera. By 1983, the Richmond and Central Virginia Board of Virginia Opera was formed and a Richmond office was opened. In November 1992, the Virginia Opera presented its first main stage performance at the Center for the Arts at George Mason University in Fairfax. Today the Opera has an operating budget of $6 million and performs 36 main stage performances yearly in Norfolk, Richmond and Fairfax. Performances reach nearly 50,000 attendees, and there are over 3,000 contributing donors to the Opera. In addition, the Virginia Opera reaches more than 200,000 students and community members yearly through its Education and Community Outreach Programs. ","Venues ","The Norfolk Center Theater began as a concrete-block structure near the Chrysler museum that originally served as a USO for armed forces personnel during World War II. The Norfolk Center Theater was renovated in 1993 and became the Edythe C. and Stanley L. Harrison Opera House, dedicated to the Virginia Opera's founder and her husband. The Harrison Opera House has 1,632 seats. \nThe Virginia Opera also plays at two other major venues in Virginia: the historical Landmark Theater in Richmond and the George Mason University Center for the Arts. The Landmark Theater, formerly known as the Mosque, was the Acca Temple Shrine in 1926 until it was bought by the City of Richmond in the 1940s. In the early 1990s it was transformed into the theater it is today. In 1925, the Appalachian Trail Conference (ATC) formed to help manage the maintenance and conservation of the AT, and in 2005, the ATC was renamed Appalachian Trail Conservancy. As of 2025, the AT spans almost 2,200 miles in 14 states from Maine to Georgia, with 25% of the trail traversing Virginia and 30 local AT clubs affiliated with the ATC.","Local hiking clubs began organizing to build and maintain the AT and joining the ATC in the 1920s and 1930s. In October 1932, Donald S. Gates, a professor at Roanoke College, gathered several hikers and local groups to discuss forming an AT club in the Roanoke area. At a second meeting in October, Myron H. Avery, the chairman of the ATC, and members from the Potomac and Natural Bridge AT Clubs joined them to explain various aspects of their work. ","On November 13, 1932, the Roanoke Appalachian Trail Club (RATC) was officially established with 17 charter members, including the first officers: president Gates, secretary E. B.
