She was raised in Cincinnati, Ohio, where she graduated from the University of Cincinnati with a B.A. in history and a B.S. in education in 1969. She received her Master of Arts degree in history from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.","Upon graduation with her Ph.D. in history from Temple University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in 1976, she worked as a a regional preservation officer for the Ohio Historic Preservation Office at Heidelberg College in Tiffin, Ohio.
