She was married to Robert Stitzel, former professor of pharmacology at WVU, from 1961 till his death in 2007. The couple had one son, David. Dr. Stitzel taught at West Virginia University from 1965 until her retirement in 1998. During that time, she served as a professor of English, director of the WVU Writing Lab, coordinator of the Women's Studies program, and director of the Center for Women's Studies. Dr. Stitzel was and continues to be active in many professional and community service organizations.","Dr. Stitzel received her B.A. in English from Barnard College (1961), her M.A. in English from the University of Wisconsin (1962), and her Ph.D. in English from the University of Minnesota (1968). She joined the West Virginia University faculty as an instructor in the Department of English in 1965 and taught at WVU until her retirement in May 1998 as professor emerita of English and women's studies. During her 33-year career at WVU, she served as the first director of the Writing Lab in the Department of English, taught some of the earliest courses on women in literature, was the first coordinator of the women's studies program (1980-1984) and the first director of the Center for Women's Studies (1984-1993). While director of the Center for Women's Studies, she established the annual JoAnne and Charles Dickinson symposium. From 1993 until her retirement, she was a professor of English and women's studies. ","Dr. Stitzel offered public and professional service to a wide variety of organizations, including the WVU Faculty Senate and Council for Women's Concerns, the West Virginia Humanities Council, and the National Women's Studies Association. She has received many honors for her teaching and commitment to social justice. Indeed, Dr. Stitzel's contributions to WVU and the state of West Virginia go far beyond her role as \"founding mother\" of women's studies in the state. Her outstanding teaching and her long-standing and outspoken advocacy for women and minorities on campus, in the community, and the state made her a role model for countless women and men who, in turn, were empowered by her support to be advocates for social justice. Dr. Stitzel's impact on the lives of these individuals is clear in the extraordinary retirement ceremony, otherwise known as the \"Judithon,\" that the Center for Women's Studies held for her in the fall of 1998. He was chair of the Department of Clinical Pharmacy for almost 16 years, from 1985-2001. Prior to this, he was director of the University's Drug Information Center. In 1988 his efforts to disseminate drug information to consumers and health professionals won him the University's Heebink Award for Outstanding State Service.","In 2001, to recognize his more than a quarter of a century of teaching, scholarship and service, a former student endowed a Distinguished Chair in his honor - Jacknowitz was named its first occupant.","In 2004, the WVU School of Pharmacy Alumni Association conferred honorary alumnus status on him. That same year, he was named WVU's Most Loyal Faculty Mountaineer. ","Jacknowitz was an academic advisor to more than 260 pre-pharmacy and pharmacy honors students. In recognition of these sustained efforts, the WVU Honors College named him Faculty Advisor of 2012, and he was inducted into the WVU Health Sciences Center Academy of Excellence in Teaching and Learning.","Jacknowitz retired after 38 years of service to WVU but remained an engaged member of the University community. At the School of Pharmacy, he continued to mentor students, coordinated its student ambassador program and was a member of the School of Pharmacy Visiting Committee. After serving on the WVU Retiree Association Steering Committee, he then served as the association's founding chair. In retirement, he became a member of the WVU Art Museum's founding class of volunteer docents. The WVU Creative Arts Center Visiting Committee honored him and his wife Linda - awarding them the College's 2019 Alison Deem Distinguished Friends Award.","Jacknowitz authored or coauthored more than 100 scientific and technical articles and abstracts, and as many presentations. He was a monthly columnist for several years for the  US Pharmacist,  a recipient of the Merck, Sharp and Dohme Award for Outstanding Achievement in the Profession of Pharmacy, and for more than a quarter of a century, he was on the editorial board of the  Drug Information Journal.  He served two five-year terms as a member of the United States Pharmacopeia USP Convention's Gastroenterology Expert Committee. He is one of only 22 healthcare professionals nationwide to serve on the 2010-2015 Medicare Model Guidelines Expert Panel, where he and his panel of colleagues received the 2011 United States Pharmacopeial Convention (USP) Award for Innovative Response to a Public Health Challenge. At the time of his death, he was serving a seventh three-year term on The National Association of Boards of Pharmacy Licensure Test Review Committee. Series and subseries have only been imposed where they accurately categorize the initial physical arrangement, allowing for the majority of Lewis's organization to remain intact. Professional Service and Additional Career Materials — were chosen to represent the three main facets of university faculty work. Series 4 is comprised of an addendum received in 2024, and subseries have been imposed based on the existing series structure.","Many of the folder titles within this collection, including in the addendum, were created by Dr. Lewis and incorporated as-is during archival arrangement. He frequently utilized abbreviations and acronyms, especially in reference to academic institutions and professional organizations. It has been added to this collection in its entirety at the donor's request, so that his body of work can be represented together.","A professor emeritus of history at West Virginia University, Lewis received his PhD in American History from the University of Akron in 1974.  He focused on regional studies, especially Appalachian history.  His first teaching opportunity was at the University of Delaware as an assistant professor from 1974 to 1985, where he focused primarily on the intersection of race and labor in the United States.  He was then hired in 1985 to teach West Virginian and Appalachian History at West Virginia University.  He earned emeritus status in 2008.  He has authored many books, earned several awards, and was a Fulbright-Hayes Commission Award Recipient.","This collection contains materials of various formats used and created by historian Dr. Ronald Lewis throughout his career. There are records and course materials from classes taught by Dr. Lewis at the University of Delaware and, primarily, at West Virginia University (WVU). It includes other documents relating to his work as a faculty advisor to graduate students in WVU's history department. There is extensive documentation of his research, most of which was done on Appalachian history and West Virginia coal mining, including articles he has written, facsimiles of primary and secondary sources used in his research, and A/V materials like oral histories. Records generated from Dr. Lewis's scholarly activities are included, such as book and article reviews and conference presentations. There are also materials relating to his other professional pursuits, such as his membership in historical organizations and correspondence with other professionals in the field. This collection provides a broad overview of the work of an historian in an academic institution. The dates provided are reflective of material creation, except within the Welsh Miners and Scott's Run subseries. These dates, listed in folder titles, reflect the content and were determined by the donor when he created and titled these files. Please be aware that the dates may not be accurate for every item within the folder/box but rather reflect the general timeframe of the subject matter. Born digital and audiovisual materials exist within the collection as floppy disks, CDs, DVDs, VHS tapes, and cassettes. Addendum of 2024 May 29 includes similar materials but reflects Dr. Lewis's more recent work.
