The group was organized and chartered as the Massanutton Chapter in 1897, with Mrs. John Paul as Regent. The name \"Massanutton\" and its spelling have been a topic of interest on several occasions through the years.","It has been an active chapter, participating and often initiation public celebrations of such annual patriotic remembrances as Flag Day, George Washington's Birthday, and Constitution Week. The chapter contributed to several national war efforts over the decades, as well as to local endeavors such as equipping a room in the Hospital. It has placed several historical markers in the area, and sponsors programs and essay contests in local schools to stimulate an appreciation for American history. In the 1960s and 70s, members compiled several lists of otherwise unnoted county graveyards (A Record of Burial Places in Rockingham County, Va.; Church and Family Cemeteries, Eastern Section, Rockingham County, Va.); produced a unique list of inns titled Ordinaries of Rockingham County and Harrisonburg, Va. 1778-1855; and compiled Revolutionary Soldiers, Rockingham County, Va. These works were sent to the Virginia State Library. Also in recent years, the chapter has held a ceremony after naturalization proceedings to welcome new citizens.","Acid-free interleaving paper was used extensively in minute books to buffer text from newspaper clippings; archival tape was used to mount loose clippings on bond paper; and the most brittle single sheets were placed into Mylar sleeves. In order to streamline the process of applying collection numbers, Special Collections staff completed a large-scale renumbering campaign in the spring of 2017. The club's Betty lamp was not retained and was returned to Danielle Torisky.","The collection is arranged into three series:","Student Organizations, 1942-2003 Administrative Files, 1928-1991 Photographs, circa 1915-1970s","The State Normal and Industrial School for Women at Harrisonburg was one of the first institutions of higher learning in Virginia to emphasize a home economics education. Home economics, also known as household arts, was deemed an essential component of a good public school education for women along with agriculture and trades. By 1918, the school began receiving federal funding as part of the Smith-Hughes Vocational Education Act to train teachers and supervisors of home economics. Two student organizations, Frances Sale Club and Phi Omicron Tau, were affiliated with the department though both were likely dissolved in the early 1990s.","Early courses in home economics covered sewing and textiles, cooking, home cleaning, home nursing, home furnishing and decoration, design, household mechanics, and millinery. The curriculum later included dietetics and child development. Notable faculty included Frances Sale, the school's first home economics instructor; Pearl Moody, head of the home economics department; Bernice Varner, dean of women and head of the home economics department; and Dorothy Rowe ('50), alumna and head of the home economics department. The League's activities include national conventions, biennial conventions, exhibitions and contests, and branch meetings. Application to the organization must be completed with examples of applicant's work, including publications and/or juried artist shows.","When first founded in 1897, the organization was called the League of American Pen Women. Marian Longfellow O'Donohue began the organization with fellow professional press women Margaret Sullivan Burke and Anna Sanborne Hamilton. All three women were involved in the press: O'Donohue, niece of poet and literary artist Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, was a poet and writer for the  Boston Transcript , the  Boston Herald , and  The Washington Post ; Burke was a capital correspondent; and Hamilton was a Social Editor for  The Washington Post  and special proof reader for the United States government. These women wanted a literary and press organization for women, since other clubs were reserved for men. In June 1897, they met with seventeen professional women for the organization's first meeting. Artist/illustrator and member, Alice R. Morgan designed the official owl insignia.  ","The League's popularity and membership grew and is popular among women artists, writers, and musical composers still today.  The League was incorporated in 1918, began its chartered local branches in 1921, and was renamed The National League of American Pen Women in 1926.
