He served briefly as editor of the Banner of Light, a Spiritualist newspaper based in New England. In 1843, Davis attended a lecture on mesmerism given by Dr. Dr. J. S. Grimes, professor of jurisprudence in the Castleton Medical College. Soon after the lecture, a local tailor named William Livingston guided Davis into a trance state, where he discovered he could see the inside of the human body and diagnose illness. According to the Encyclopedia of Occultism and Parapsychology, \"In 1844 Davis had a strange experience that was to have an enduring effect on his life. Babcoke was born in Missouri on April 28, 1910 to Louis Eugene Babcoke and Maude\n Vernon Babcoke. He married Wilma \"Billie\" Orvetta Atkins and had two daughters, Marge and\n Patricia. Babcoke first wrote to the A.R.E. in 1953 after readings Gina Cerminara's book\n Many Mansions. According to Gladys Davis Turner, \"He wrote us that the next day he went to a\n bookstore and bought everything he could find on Edgar Cayce and related material, saying\n that he had 'finally found something that made sense in regard to religious philosophy.\"\n (A.R.E. News, April 1983). He converted his garage into a lending library and amassed over\n 400 Cayce-related books. In 1958, he added the A.R.E. tape library, which he brought with\n him when the Babcoke family moved to Virginia Beach in 1967. Babcoke organized Hugh Lynn\n Cayce's first Phoenix, Arizona lecture in 1956. The following year, Babcoke introduced Hugh\n Lynn to William and Gladys McGarey, who later founded the A.R.E. clinic in Phoenix. The\n first Phoenix study group also formed in 1957.
