After leaving Iowa to attend college at the University of Chicago, Van Vechten moved to New York in 1906 where he worked as a noted music, drama, art, and cultural critic throughout his life. He was also highly interested in promoting the literary arts as well as authoring numerous works himself. In addition to his own literary work, Van Vechten supported a number of authors and artists, especially those affiliated with the Harlem Renaissance, as well as befriending Gertrude Stein. In his later years, Van Vechten also became a noted portrait photographer. He married Anna Elizabeth Snyder in 1907, but the couple divorced in 1912.  He later married Russian actress, Fania Marinoff, in 1914. Van Vechten passed away in New York in 1964. Numerous biographies and specialized studies are available in the library for further research.","Mark Lutz was born in Glassborough, New Jersey, in 1901, but moved with his family to Richmond the next year when his father became the editor of the Richmond News Leader. Lutz attended the University of Richmond, graduating in 1926 before following his father into the business of journalism. Lutz worked for both the Richmond News Leader and the Times-Dispatch as a book reviewer and theater critic. He met Van Vechten through a friend in the early 1930s and remained lifelong friends. Lutz eventually moved to the Germantown area of Philadelphia, working for the Philco News and other industrial publications. Lutz passed away in Philadelphia in 1969. Upon his death, per his request, the letters between Lutz and Van Vechten were destroyed.","Donated by Mark Lutz, William Jepson, and Bruce Kellner at various times between 1978 and 1992.","The photographs in Subseries IVH contain depictions of St. Christopher and St. Barbara in various locations, primarily in Spain. Northern. Perry Northern Jester's parents were John Roberts Jester (1875-1965), former secretary of the Georgia Baptist Education Board and later President of Baptist College of Oklahoma, and Annie Allen Perry Jester (1878-1970), daughter of noted pastor Dr. J.W. Perry of Winder, Georgia. Noted in the University of Richmond (UR) yearbook as being from Winston-Salem, North Carolina, Perry Northern Jester attended the University of Richmond for his first three years of college working towards a Bachelor of Science degree between 1921 and 1924. During his time at UR, he participated in numerous student organizations, including Tri Phi, YMCA, Glee Club \u0026 the College Quartet, and the Globe Trotters.  After his junior year, Jester transferred to the University of Virginia where he graduated.","Newspaper articles from the time offer conflicting information about Jester's education. Note that a 1928 article in the Washington, D.C. Evening Star (13 May 1928) reports that \"Perry Northern Jester came to Washington from Bailey Military Institute in Greenwood, Ga., and studied law in the George Washington University and then entered the foreign service. He began his service in Hong Kong.\" Additional records indicate he was married to Olive Willie Webster (b. 12 June 1889) who died on 13 July 1963 in Charlottesville, Virginia, and on 18 August 1964, he married Edith Maude Brundrett Hyder (1900-1995) in Williamsburg, Virginia.","Jester worked in the diplomatic corps of the United States for most of his career. Willis and Eleanor worked together and separately on projects. For example, for the book An Allegorical ABC Book About Father Junipero Serra, published in 1977, Willis printed the book, and Eleanor provided the illustrations. A printing proof from this book is included in the collection. There are booklets and pamphlets from the Attic Press and the William Byrd Press included within this collection and over thirty other books and pamphlets from other publishers. In addition, this collection contains copies of the obituaries of Willis and Eleanor Shell, memories of Willis and Eleanor Shell written by her niece, Margaret Roberts Thomas, and ephemera, booklets, and pamphlets relating to Willis A. Shell and his publishing companies. Due to the quality of his work, Willis A. Shell quickly became a respected printer and illustrator. In 1952 he produced three of the five entries from Richmond, VA for a 1952 Southeastern Library Association competition. These five entries were part of the total of 16 volumes designated as the best in Southern book production. Another interesting proof in this collection is a book created in nine days for Colonial Williamsburg. The combination of Eleanor's reputation as an illustrator and Willis' unique book design and printing led to the commission from Colonial Williamsburg to produce a book about Williamsburg crafts to present to Queen Elizabeth during her 1954 visit. One book he designed while at William Byrd Press was David John Mays' Edmund Pendleton, which won a Pulitzer Prize. Shell was also a charter member of the Bibliographic Society of the University of Virginia. He also served as chairman of the Special Collections Committee at the Richmond Public Library and was a member of the Rotunda Club, the Advertising Federation of America, the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, and the Virginia Historical Society. Eleanor was a member of the Woman's Club, the Friends of Richmond Public Library, the Virginia Bibliographical Society, and the Associates of the James Branch Cabell Library.","Due to their ties to the print and illustration community, the Shell collection also holds a variety of materials created by friends, including Christmas cards from both David Clinger and Warren Chappell, both noted figures in their own fields and donors to the Galvin Rare Book Room collections.
