From 1918-1919 was an officer in the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers and was the commander of the Student Army Training Corps at VMI. Following his retirement as Superintendent he continued to lecture in Pure and Applied Mathematics. Gore, Jr., Adam L. Randolph III, Richard E. Valentine, Jr., and Philip L. Wilkerson Jr., who, along with Larry H. Foster, were the first African Americans to matriculate at the Virginia Military Institute in September 1968.  The panel commemorated the 50th anniversary of the year (1968-1969) that these five men matriculated at VMI. It took place on April 26, 2019, and was moderated by Col. Keith E.
