Davis (1874-1960) was born to John Conrad Davis and Mahulda Simmons Davis of Lewis County, West Virginia. Davis moved to Broadway, Virginia in 1892 and to Singers Glen, Virginia in 1896 where he lived the remainder of his life. While in West Virginia, Davis was a school teacher. He pursued the carpentry trade after moving to Virginia. Additionally, Davis served his community as a clerk, judge, and county committeeman for Singers Glen. He was a member of the Evangelical United Brethren (EUB) Church in Singers Glen. Davis married Edith Belle Long (1876-1965) of Singers Glen and together they had three children – Letha (1899-1986), Charles Russell (1906-1976), and Price Albert (1907-1979). Edith was born to Conrad Long and Phoebe Catherine Burgendine Long. Like her husband, Edith was a member of the local EUB congregation.","Their daughter Letha, a lifelong member of the Singers Glen EUB church and a member of the Disabled American Veterans auxiliary, went on to marry Earl Alpheus Kline (1896-1967). Kline was born to Benjamin B. Kline and Ella Mae Wilkins Kline. He was employed as one of the first electrical contractors in Rockingham County and later worked at REA and Madison College. The Klines had three children – Earl Jr., Eleanor Aletha (1922-2016), and Mary Davis (1934-2017).","On June 22, 1957, Mary Davis Kline married Ralph Bartlett \"Penny\" Hutton (1923-1993). The couple had one child, born Ralph Bartlett Hutton II (November 12, 1958-November 13, 1958), who died in infancy. Mary graduated from Broadway High School and from Madison College in 1955 with a Bachelor of Science degree in home economics education. She taught at Elkton High School for 10 years before working as a home economist for VEPCO (now Virginia Power) and went on to serve as the first school food service supervisor for Harrisonburg City Schools. She retired in 1991 after 17 years with the Virginia Department of Education. She was a member of the American Home Economics Association and the American School Food Service Association. He pursued the carpentry trade after moving to Virginia. Additionally, Davis served his community as a clerk, judge, and county committeeman for Singers Glen. He was a member of the Evangelical United Brethren (EUB) Church in Singers Glen. Davis married Edith Belle Long (1876-1965) of Singers Glen and together they had three children – Letha (1899-1986), Charles Russell (1906-1976), and Price Albert (1907-1979). Edith was born to Conrad Long and Phoebe Catherine Burgendine Long. Like her husband, Edith was a member of the local EUB congregation.","Their daughter Letha, a lifelong member of the Singers Glen EUB church and a member of the Disabled American Veterans auxiliary, went on to marry Earl Alpheus Kline (1896-1967). Kline was born to Benjamin B. Kline and Ella Mae Wilkins Kline. He was employed as one of the first electrical contractors in Rockingham County and later worked at REA and Madison College. The Klines had three children – Earl Jr., Eleanor Aletha (1922-2016), and Mary Davis (1934-2017).","On June 22, 1957, Mary Davis Kline married Ralph Bartlett \"Penny\" Hutton (1923-1993). The couple had one child, born Ralph Bartlett Hutton II (November 12, 1958-November 13, 1958), who died in infancy. Rexrode was an elder, deacon, and chairman of the board of trustees for Mossy Creek Presbyterian Church (a historic church established in 1768 in Augusta County). Rexrode was also the secretary-treasurer of the Rockingham County Land Bank Association and assistant secretary-treasurer of Staunton Production Credit Association. He served on the Augusta County Planning Commission three times. Additionally, he was director and president of the Augusta County Farm Bureau Federation, as well as director and president of the Augusta County Petroleum Co-op. Brand and her husband Dr. Louis Christian Brand were Presbyterian Missionaries in Korea from 1924-1938, during the time that Korea was occupied by Japan. Dr. Brand was a physician and third director of the Ellen-Lavine Graham Hospital (now the Kwangju Christian Hospital) in Kwangju, Korea, where he was devoted to the elimination of tuberculosis. The Brand's daughter, Mary Alice Brand Boyle 1924-2006), and son-in-law, Lewis Venable Boyle (1923-2005), are also documented in this collection.","In order to streamline the process of applying collection numbers, Special Collections staff completed a large-scale renumbering campaign in 2017-2018.  This collection was previously cataloged as SC 5039.  During this time, the collection was minimally reprocessed in order to simplify the arrangement and description, and rehoused to remove unnecessary oversize boxes. The collection was originally processed in 2012 and described in minute detail, often at the item-level (e.g. obituaries). Some of this description was retained. Description that was deemed irrelevant or superfluous was not retained during reprocessing. Photographs were grouped according to identifications made by the original processor and were housed in plastic sleeves. Rexrode was an elder, deacon, and chairman of the board of trustees for Mossy Creek Presbyterian Church (a historic church established in 1768 in Augusta County). Rexrode was also the secretary-treasurer of the Rockingham County Land Bank Association and assistant secretary-treasurer of Staunton Production Credit Association. He served on the Augusta County Planning Commission three times. Additionally, he was director and president of the Augusta County Farm Bureau Federation, as well as director and president of the Augusta County Petroleum Co-op. Brand and her husband Dr. Louis Christian Brand were Presbyterian Missionaries in Korea from 1924-1938, during the time that Korea was occupied by Japan. Dr. Brand was a physician and third director of the Ellen-Lavine Graham Hospital (now the Kwangju Christian Hospital) in Kwangju, Korea, where he was devoted to the elimination of tuberculosis. The Brand's daughter, Mary Alice Brand Boyle 1924-2006), and son-in-law, Lewis Venable Boyle (1923-2005), are also documented in this collection.","In order to streamline the process of applying collection numbers, Special Collections staff completed a large-scale renumbering campaign in 2017-2018.  This collection was previously cataloged as SC 5039.  During this time, the collection was minimally reprocessed in order to simplify the arrangement and description, and rehoused to remove unnecessary oversize boxes. The collection was originally processed in 2012 and described in minute detail, often at the item-level (e.g. obituaries). Some of this description was retained. Description that was deemed irrelevant or superfluous was not retained during reprocessing. Photographs were grouped according to identifications made by the original processor and were housed in plastic sleeves. It is indexed alphabetically by food category and home remedy type (e.g. bedbugs, breads, cakes, headache cures, etc.). Originally serving as an account book, the ledger was repurposed into a scrapbook, presumably by Janie Shuler. Based on pages that are not covered by newspaper clippings, the account book dates from approximately 1893 to 1901. Little can be gleaned about the account book other than it was likely a ledger for a store operated by the Shuler family. Items purchased and recorded in the account book are of the household goods variety and include foodstuffs, clothing, and other basic necessities. The account book was repurposed into a scrapbook by at least the mid to late 1920s, based on the dates present on newspaper clippings. The scrapbook exhibits significant acid burn from the many newspaper clippings laid in and pasted to the pages.","Loose items, including newspaper clippings, handwritten recipes, ephemera, and correspondence, were removed from the scrapbook and foldered separately. They are arranged in the order they were removed from the scrapbook. Included is an owner's manual for the Wonder Can Sealer distributed by Sears Roebuck \u0026 Co. and various materials related to raising chickens. Included in the correspondence is one letter to Janie Shuler from her mother dated April 16, 1927 and one letter, postmarked July 1, 1915, to a Mary J. Nicholas from her sister Nora. The letter was addressed care of Daniel Preston Shuler, Charles Shuler's father.","The collection also includes a multi-use ledger dated 1906-1929. \"The Electric Light Co. 1010-12 Quebec St. Allentown, Pa.\" is handwritten on the front flyleaf. However, the content within, while of a disparate sort, does not appear to have any relation to this company. The first seven pages date to the fall of 1906 and are comprised of a member list and meeting minutes for the Sumter County, Georgia teachers. This was likely kept by Charles Shuler while he was a public school teacher in Georgia. The remainder of the ledger is comprised of daily expense and income accounts, presumably for the Shuler family.","A second ledger, dated 1921-1923, with accounting information related to Daniel Preston Shuler is included. The ledger also contains daily time accounts for a worker by the name of McKenley.","Also contained within the collection is a course notebook belonging to Janie Shuler while she was a student at the State Normal School for Women at Harrisonburg. The two-ring binder was separated from the course notes within and retained due to internal annotations. Janie kept notes on Shakespeare, sociology, poetry, eighteenth century literature, The Pilgrim's Progress, classical music, and mythology. She also lists the books required for History of Social Education. Programs from school productions are interleaved in the notes.","Lastly, the collection includes an undated ledger book with a sketch of a schoolgirl on the front flyleaf. Per their marriage announcement, Charles Shuler was the principal of Port Republic High School at the time of their nuptials.","The Shulers, according to the 1920 census, were residents of Westchester County, New York where Charles Shuler taught and Janie Shuler was matron at the New York Juvenile Asylum. They returned to Rockingham County, Virginia by 1921 when Janie Shuler matriculated into the State Normal School for Women at Harrisonburg. She was involved in the High School Club, Athletic Association, French Circle, and the Y. W. C. A. Janie was known as \"Mrs. Shuler\" by her fellow classmates and was described as being quiet, calm, dignified, and always on time. She earned a professional diploma in 1923. By 1930, both Shulers were employed as public school teachers.","Charles Shuler died May 6, 1936 and is buried at Port Republic Cemetery. After her husband's death, Janie returned to school and earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education from Madison College in 1939. The 1860 census lists a J. Snyder living in Augusta County who is married to S. Snyder, with two children: W. H. and J. A. Snyder. The 1860 census, along with the 1899 Augusta County Business Directory, also lists J. Snyder as a blacksmith. Additionally, a genealogy site documenting the Sheets family of Pennsylvania, Virginia, and Iowa references a John Snyder who was born in 1824 and died after 1900 in Augusta County. This John Snyder was married to his cousin, Sarah Sheetz, in March 1849, and together they had four children: William H. Snyder (b. 1849), Joseph A. Snyder (b. 1851), Martin Snyder (b. 1861), and Lewis J. Snyder (b. 1863). The genealogy site also mentions that John worked as a blacksmith as well as a farmer. All of this information is consistent with the business directory, census records, and dates of the ledgers. ","The Snyder family photo album originally included a sheet of paper that records the date of death of a John Snyder on February 7, 1901, a date that correlates with the information above. This document is retained in the collection. A few of the photographs inside of the album contain captions such as \"Uncle John,\" \"Lewis Snyder,\" and \"Cousin Martin Snyder,\" indicating that the album may have been owned by a sibling or cousin of John or Sarah Snyder.","In order to streamline the process of applying collection numbers, Special Collections staff completed a large-scale renumbering campaign in 2017-2019.  The Snyder Ledger Collection was previously cataloged as SC 5026. The Snyder Family Photograph Collection was previously cataloged as P 0004","As part of renumbering, the two Snyder collections were combined in an attempt to reestablish original order. Both collections were acquired from the same estate sale and have shared provenance, but during initial processing in 2011 the materials were inexplicably separated by format (photographs and ledgers) and arranged into two collections. The photographs were originally housed in a photo album, but were removed and placed in individual paper envelopes. The photographs were assigned unique identifiers and filed according to their original order in the photo album. Three newspaper clippings containing Snyder family obituaries were affixed to the inside covers of the photo album. The clippings were photocopied and originals discarded. The biographical note was not significantly updated during reprocessing.","The Snyder Family Papers, ca. 1805-1901, comprise two account books and photographs documenting the John Snyder (variously spelled Snider) family of Augusta County. Snyder was a blacksmith operating out of Parnassus in Augusta County, Virginia. Surnames recorded in the ledgers include Showalter, Moyer, Miller, Shumate, and Huffman.","The 46 photographs in the collection include albumen prints, collodion prints, gelatin developing-out paper, and tintypes. All of the photos are black and white or sepia in color, and most are accompanied by a matte frame or a decorative paper sleeve. The photographs are housed individually and are arranged in the original order they were found in upon removal from the photo album. There are presumably images of John Snyder and two of his children in this collection. Notations by said photograph refer to him as \"Uncle John.\" There is also an obituary for John A. Marshall, whose children are included in the images and are referred to as cousins.
