The material relates to the \n         Johnsons of \n         Petersburg, the \n         Kagys of \n         New Market, and the \n         Logans of \n         Salem, as well as other families.","Letters, 1838-January 1849, to \n         William Ransom Johnson, are chiefly\n         concerned with business matters. Colonel Johnson (1782-1849)\n         was a member of the \n         North CarolinaHouse of Representatives\n         from \n         Warren County, 1807-1808 and 1810-1814;\n         the House of Delegates from \n         Petersburg, 1818-1820 and \n         Chesterfield County, 1821-1822; the \n         VirginiaSenate, 1823-1826; and, the \n         VirginiaHouse of Representatives,\n         1828-1830 and 1833-1837. He married \n         Mary Evansin 1803, and their sons\n         included \n         William Ransom Johnson, Jr., \n         J. E. Johnson, and \n         Marmaduke Johnson. Known as \"The Napoleon\n         of the Turf,\" he was the leading turfman of America for a\n         generation. He established stables at \n         Oakland, \n         Chesterfield County, Virginia, beginning\n         his career on \n         Virginiaturf. During 1808-1813, he raced\n         \"Sir Archy\" and \"Pacolet,\" and won $30,000. He was the leader\n         and manager for the South in the \n         South-North Races, \n         Washington, D.C.in 1823, and also in\n         nearly all thirty contests until 1834. He died in \n         Mobile, Alabamaon February 10, 1849, and\n         was buried at \n         Oakland. Letters, February 26, 1845 and\n         February 2, 1846, from \n         William Yates Gholson(1807-1870), a\n         lawyer practicing in \n         Cincinnati, Ohio, concern a judgment\n         against \n         Mary A. Pughand the collection of the\n         payment in the \n         U. S. District Court. There are several\n         letters (March 30, April 20, October 4, December 3, 1845; and,\n         January 27, March 24, 1846) from \n         Eggleston Cheatham, the overseer for \n         William Ransom Johnson's estate in \n         Yazoo County, Mississippi. These letters\n         discuss a dispute between Johnson and his estate manager, \n         William Berry, and the latter's refusal\n         to accompany Negroes to Johnson in \n         New Orleans, Louisianauntil they make a\n         settlement; and, attempts to sell Johnson's property and\n         estate in \n         Yazoo County. One sale contract, a rent\n         with the option to buy, fell through because of the\n         purchaser's \"bad luck with his negroes since he came to this\n         neighborhood.\" After Cheatham's death in December 1848, there\n         is a letter, July 23, 1849, from his brother \n         William Cheahamto \n         William Ransom Johnson, Jr., concerning\n         the difficulty in selling the estate.","Letters, 1849-1871, to \n         William Ransom Johnson, Jr., are\n         concerned with his father's estate as well as his own business\n         affairs. There are a few letters from his brothers, \n         J. E. Johnson(October 26, 1849; December\n         16, 1850; and, February 22, 1851) and \n         Marmaduke Johnson(January 28, December\n         11, 1850; and, February 26, 1852) mentioning such matters. In\n         his letter of October 26, 1849, \n         J. E. Johnsonwrites about their father's\n         estate, including the sale of \n         Bellegroveand a settlement with \"Bruce,\"\n         and asks if there is \"any negro woman belonging to the estate\n         worth from $200 to $500 who would make a good cook \u0026 has\n         no family!\" In his letter of January 28, 1850, \n         Marmaduke Johnsonexpresses his wish to\n         bid for the tract of land bought by their father from \n         Branch Archer. There are also letters\n         from associates which touch upon various business matters. A\n         January 8, 1851 letter from \n         George Nicholson Johnson, an attorney,\n         discusses problems with General \n         [John] Pegram's estate due to its being\n         advertised for sale by \n         W. R. Johnson, Jr.without the consent of \n         Will Carter. A September 14, 1853 letter\n         from \n         Tazewell Taylor, Bursar of \n         William and Mary College, brings up the\n         matter of some property for sale. There is an interesting\n         letter, January 18, 1852, from \n         Thomas B. Poindexter, \n         Louisville, Kentucky, which discusses a\n         racehorse, \"Sally Morgan.\" The writer relates that it was the\n         wish of Johnson's father to have the horse sent to \n         Boston, where she is now a successful\n         runner, and also to give the horse to himself. There are two\n         letters, December 9, 1868 and February 20, 1869, from \n         Meador and Brothers, Tobacco Commission\n         Merchants, \n         Atlanta, Georgia, which discuss tobacco\n         stock and the forced lowering of prices. Other correspondents\n         include attorneys and legislators, such as \n         John Mercer Patton(1797-1858), \n         George Washington Jones(1806-1884), \n         Samuel McDowell Moore(1796-1875), \n         James A. Seddon(1815-1880), and \n         John Minor Botts(1802-1869). In his March\n         31, 1849 letter, Patton discusses the suit of King vs.\n         Johnson. In his letters of April 22 and July 17, 1849, Jones\n         writes about his financial troubles and inability to pay the\n         Johnson estate, his position in office being in jeopardy, and\n         his having no property beyond his salary. Moore writes on\n         August 3, 1849 concerning a settlement made two years earlier;\n         and, Botts writes on June 12, 1850 about an account against\n         himself at \n         Oakland. In his October 14, 1849 letter,\n         Seddon responds to Johnson's offer of his mountain estate, and\n         mentions his own estate in \n         Mecklenburg. Letters, August-September\n         1850, are concerned with the impending sale of \n         Oaklandand the slaves on September\n         25.","Correspondence of the \n         Kagyand related families, 1803-1896, covers\n         a wide variety of subjects. In his March 16, 1803 letter to an\n         unknown recipient, \n         William Armistead Burwell(1780-1821)\n         discusses the management of his claim upon \"W.C.N.\" A December\n         12, 1865 letter from \n         Francis J. Smithto \n         Joseph B. Gentrydiscusses his election to\n         the Office of Treasurer and his connection to the \n         Richmond and Fredericksburg Rail Road.\n         There are several personal letters from \n         Thomas A. Ayreto his friend \n         Baxter W. Logan. In a June 2, 1873 letter\n         from \n         Norfolk, Ayre relates the effect of the\n         Civil War on his family, and the loss of his father's wealth\n         which he had in the form of property such as slaves. A letter,\n         April 2, 1874, from \n         J. B. Jacksonin \n         Washington, D.C.to \n         Baxter W. Logan, describes a visit to the\n         Capitol where he heard Senator \n         [Allen Granberry] Thurmanof Ohio,\n         mentions a few other individuals being there from the Indian\n         Nation, refers to seeing Vice-President \n         [Henry] Wilsonand Senator \n         [James Winright] Flanagan, and also\n         mentions a stop at the \n         University of Virginia. Another\n         interesting letter, May 26, 1875, from \n         Terrell and Walthallto \n         J. P. M. Sanders, describes an enclosed\n         rough draft of a four passenger rockaway. Letters of May 1890\n         are concerned with the unveiling of the Lee Monument in \n         Richmond.","Business and legal papers, 1796-1875, relate to various\n         Virginia families. There are papers relative to the estates of\n         Edwin Burwell(ca. 1798-1800), \n         Joseph Selden(ca. 1802-1804), \n         James W. Known as \"The Napoleon\n         of the Turf,\" he was the leading turfman of America for a\n         generation. He established stables at \n         Oakland, \n         Chesterfield County, Virginia, beginning\n         his career on \n         Virginiaturf. During 1808-1813, he raced\n         \"Sir Archy\" and \"Pacolet,\" and won $30,000. He was the leader\n         and manager for the South in the \n         South-North Races, \n         Washington, D.C.in 1823, and also in\n         nearly all thirty contests until 1834. He died in \n         Mobile, Alabamaon February 10, 1849, and\n         was buried at \n         Oakland. Letters, February 26, 1845 and\n         February 2, 1846, from \n         William Yates Gholson(1807-1870), a\n         lawyer practicing in \n         Cincinnati, Ohio, concern a judgment\n         against \n         Mary A. Pughand the collection of the\n         payment in the \n         U. S. District Court. There are several\n         letters (March 30, April 20, October 4, December 3, 1845; and,\n         January 27, March 24, 1846) from \n         Eggleston Cheatham, the overseer for \n         William Ransom Johnson's estate in \n         Yazoo County, Mississippi. These letters\n         discuss a dispute between Johnson and his estate manager, \n         William Berry, and the latter's refusal\n         to accompany Negroes to Johnson in \n         New Orleans, Louisianauntil they make a\n         settlement; and, attempts to sell Johnson's property and\n         estate in \n         Yazoo County. One sale contract, a rent\n         with the option to buy, fell through because of the\n         purchaser's \"bad luck with his negroes since he came to this\n         neighborhood.\" After Cheatham's death in December 1848, there\n         is a letter, July 23, 1849, from his brother \n         William Cheahamto \n         William Ransom Johnson, Jr., concerning\n         the difficulty in selling the estate.","Letters, 1849-1871, to \n         William Ransom Johnson, Jr., are\n         concerned with his father's estate as well as his own business\n         affairs. There are a few letters from his brothers, \n         J. E. Johnson(October 26, 1849; December\n         16, 1850; and, February 22, 1851) and \n         Marmaduke Johnson(January 28, December\n         11, 1850; and, February 26, 1852) mentioning such matters. In\n         his letter of October 26, 1849, \n         J. E. Johnsonwrites about their father's\n         estate, including the sale of \n         Bellegroveand a settlement with \"Bruce,\"\n         and asks if there is \"any negro woman belonging to the estate\n         worth from $200 to $500 who would make a good cook \u0026 has\n         no family!\" In his letter of January 28, 1850, \n         Marmaduke Johnsonexpresses his wish to\n         bid for the tract of land bought by their father from \n         Branch Archer. There are also letters\n         from associates which touch upon various business matters. A\n         January 8, 1851 letter from \n         George Nicholson Johnson, an attorney,\n         discusses problems with General \n         [John] Pegram's estate due to its being\n         advertised for sale by \n         W. R. Johnson, Jr.without the consent of \n         Will Carter. A September 14, 1853 letter\n         from \n         Tazewell Taylor, Bursar of \n         William and Mary College, brings up the\n         matter of some property for sale. There is an interesting\n         letter, January 18, 1852, from \n         Thomas B. Poindexter, \n         Louisville, Kentucky, which discusses a\n         racehorse, \"Sally Morgan.\" The writer relates that it was the\n         wish of Johnson's father to have the horse sent to \n         Boston, where she is now a successful\n         runner, and also to give the horse to himself. There are two\n         letters, December 9, 1868 and February 20, 1869, from \n         Meador and Brothers, Tobacco Commission\n         Merchants, \n         Atlanta, Georgia, which discuss tobacco\n         stock and the forced lowering of prices. Other correspondents\n         include attorneys and legislators, such as \n         John Mercer Patton(1797-1858), \n         George Washington Jones(1806-1884), \n         Samuel McDowell Moore(1796-1875), \n         James A. Seddon(1815-1880), and \n         John Minor Botts(1802-1869). In his March\n         31, 1849 letter, Patton discusses the suit of King vs.\n         Johnson. In his letters of April 22 and July 17, 1849, Jones\n         writes about his financial troubles and inability to pay the\n         Johnson estate, his position in office being in jeopardy, and\n         his having no property beyond his salary. Moore writes on\n         August 3, 1849 concerning a settlement made two years earlier;\n         and, Botts writes on June 12, 1850 about an account against\n         himself at \n         Oakland. In his October 14, 1849 letter,\n         Seddon responds to Johnson's offer of his mountain estate, and\n         mentions his own estate in \n         Mecklenburg. Letters, August-September\n         1850, are concerned with the impending sale of \n         Oaklandand the slaves on September\n         25.","Correspondence of the \n         Kagyand related families, 1803-1896, covers\n         a wide variety of subjects. In his March 16, 1803 letter to an\n         unknown recipient, \n         William Armistead Burwell(1780-1821)\n         discusses the management of his claim upon \"W.C.N.\" A December\n         12, 1865 letter from \n         Francis J. Smithto \n         Joseph B. Gentrydiscusses his election to\n         the Office of Treasurer and his connection to the \n         Richmond and Fredericksburg Rail Road.\n         There are several personal letters from \n         Thomas A. Ayreto his friend \n         Baxter W. Logan. In a June 2, 1873 letter\n         from \n         Norfolk, Ayre relates the effect of the\n         Civil War on his family, and the loss of his father's wealth\n         which he had in the form of property such as slaves. A letter,\n         April 2, 1874, from \n         J. B. Jacksonin \n         Washington, D.C.to \n         Baxter W. Logan, describes a visit to the\n         Capitol where he heard Senator \n         [Allen Granberry] Thurmanof Ohio,\n         mentions a few other individuals being there from the Indian\n         Nation, refers to seeing Vice-President \n         [Henry] Wilsonand Senator \n         [James Winright] Flanagan, and also\n         mentions a stop at the \n         University of Virginia. Another\n         interesting letter, May 26, 1875, from \n         Terrell and Walthallto \n         J. P. M. Sanders, describes an enclosed\n         rough draft of a four passenger rockaway. Letters of May 1890\n         are concerned with the unveiling of the Lee Monument in \n         Richmond.","Business and legal papers, 1796-1875, relate to various\n         Virginia families. There are papers relative to the estates of\n         Edwin Burwell(ca. 1798-1800), \n         Joseph Selden(ca. 1802-1804), \n         James W. Pegram(ca. 1844-1845), and \n         William Ransom Johnson(ca. 1845-1850);\n         and, the \n         Richmondfirm of \n         Caperton and Crump(1830s-1840s).\n         Miscellaneous items of interest include: Sale of 105 barrels\n         flour, December 10, 1827; Invoice of 289 hogsheads sugar\n         purchased by \n         Carroll Hoy and Company, 1861-1862; and,\n         Tobacco sales to \n         William Ransom Johnsonfrom \n         Branch, Scott, and Company, February 23,\n         June 9, 1868 and January 31, February 23, 1869.","There are several references to blacks among the business\n         and legal papers. An account of the Estate of \n         Joseph Seldenwith Dr. \n         Joseph Trent, 1803-1804, includes a\n         reference to \"visiting negro woman in the Measles...\" There\n         are several promissory notes and receipts for the hire of\n         Negroes by the names of \" \n         Jim\u0026 \n         Jerry\" (July 15, 1840), \" \n         Jim Lumpkin\" (January 4, 1841), \" \n         Kelly\" (January 2, 1849), \" \n         Frederick\" (January 1, 1850), and \" \n         Robin\u0026 \n         Richard\" (January 2, 1850).
