He attended the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York; the University of Michigan; and the University of Illionis, where he received a PhD in chemistry. He worked for Dupont Company from 1940 until 1942, when he joined Monsanto Co. in Dayton, Ohio, eventually working on the Dayton Project, which was a part of the Manhattan Project. Rollinson was a professor of chemistry at the University of Maryland from 1946 until retiring in 1979.
