On May 18, 1864, he enlisted in Company A, 132nd Indiana Infantry (a 100-day regiment), and was mustered out on August 1, 1864. On February 1, 1865, he enlisted in the 109th U. S. Colored Troops; he was promoted to 2nd lieutenant on November 8, and mustered out of service  February 6, 1866. Iliff married Cynthia A. Willard (1845-1893), and the couple would have six children.
