He graduated at United States Military Academy in 1837. He resigned from the army, studied law and practiced. He served in the Virginia General Assembly and in the Mexican War. He opposed secession. He was a colonel of the 24th Virginia Infantry. Rose to lieutenant-general and was defeated at Winchester, Fishers Hill, and Cedar Creek. He was employed by the Louisiana lottery and practiced law in Lynchburg. Wrote A Memoir of the Last Year of the War for Independence in the Confederate States of America (1866). He remained unreconstructed and died on 2 March 1894.
