Hawthorne remained connected to track and field at William and Mary after graduation, creating Track Talk, a newsletter for William and Mary track alumni in 1976, as well as raising funds to benefit the track and field program. In 2008, Hawthorne was awarded the William and Mary Alumni Medallion, given by the William and Mary Alumni Association for his service and dedication to the College. After leaving William and Mary, he served in the U.S. Army and eventually worked in a private accounting practice in Williamsburg, Virginia.
