He also served as an Intelligence/Security Officer in the United States Navy and later served as a Liaison Officer with the Army during the Normandy invasion. Whichard was briefly called to active duty again during the Korean War. He retired from teaching as Professor Emeritus of Romance Languages and Literature from Old Dominion University in 1972.
