He received a PhD at The University of North Carolina, going on to teach at the College of William and Mary, Norfolk Division as an instructor of foreign languages for 25 years. Whichard authored a number of history publications and books, including The History of Lower Tidewater, Virginia. He also served as an Intelligence/Security Officer in the United States Navy and later served as a Liaison Officer with the Army during the Normandy invasion. Whichard was briefly called to active duty again during the Korean War. He retired from teaching as Professor Emeritus of Romance Languages and Literature from Old Dominion University in 1972.
