The banner was commissioned at the request of Leslie Lyle Campbell, Class of 1887. It was designed by Professor W. G. Brown, who embroidered the words \"Washington and Lee University\" in gold lettering across a blue scroll. Below the scroll, Brown placed a composite heraldic shield combining distinct elements from both the George Washington and Robert E. Lee family coats of arms. While this 1890 banner served as the initial foundation, Professor Brown expanded upon this original shield to design the full, official university coat of arms, complete with the crest and the motto \"Non Incautus Futuri, \"shortly before 1903. Taken from the New Testament (1 Thessalonians 5:21), it translates to \"Test All Things\" (or \"examine all things\"), representing the university's commitment to critical thinking and open inquiry. \nUpper Right Quarter (The Washington Arms): This quadrant contains two red horizontal bars topped by three red, five-pointed stars (heraldic \"mullets\") on a silver background. This design is pulled directly from the George Washington family coat of arms (the same ancestral design that inspired the modern Washington, D.C. flag).\nLower Left Quarter (The Lee Arms): This quadrant features a red field with a checkered gold and blue horizontal bar, surrounded by ten silver blocks (\"billets\"). This pattern belongs to the 13th century English sheriff Reginald de Le, an early ancestor of Robert E. Lee. \nLower Right Quarter (The Astley-Lee Arms): This quadrant shows a silver five petaled flower (\"cinquefoil\") on a blue background, framed by a wavy edged ermine border. These elements were added to the Lee family arms following a historic marriage connection with the Astley family of Nordley, England.\nThe Crest (Top Element) Embellishing the top of the shield is a black raven rising out of a golden ducal coronet. This feature is also a direct borrowing from the traditional Washington family crest.\nThe main motto flowing on a scroll beneath the shield is the phrase \"Non Incautus Futuri\". Borrowed from the Lee family arms and originally adapted from Horace's Satires, it translates to \"Not Unmindful of the Future,\" serving as a reminder to look ahead and act with foresight."],"_nest_path_":"/components#1/components#285","timestamp":"2026-08-14T22:38:07.513Z","collection":{"numFound":1,"start":0,"numFoundExact":true,"docs":[{"id":"vilxw_repositories_5_resources_1311","ead_ssi":"vilxw_repositories_5_resources_1311","_root_":"vilxw_repositories_5_resources_1311","_nest_parent_":"vilxw_repositories_5_resources_1311","ead_source_url_ssi":"data/oai/WLU/repositories_5_resources_1311.xml","title_filing_ssi":"Rockbridge Historical Society Photograph and Negatives collection","title_ssm":["Rockbridge Historical Society Photograph and Negatives collection"],"title_tesim":["Rockbridge Historical Society Photograph and Negatives collection"],"unitdate_ssm":["circa late 1850s - 2000"],"unitdate_inclusive_ssm":["circa late 1850s - 2000"],"normalized_date_ssm":["2000"],"normalized_title_ssm":["Rockbridge Historical Society Photograph and Negatives collection, 2000"],"text":["Rockbridge Historical Society Photograph and Negatives collection, 2000","RHS.Coll.1002","/repositories/5/resources/1311","The collection is open for research use.","These photographs and negatives were collected by the Rockbridge Historical Society. Running along a ridge overlooking Lexington, Virginia, this symmetrical row of five Greek Revival buildings evolved over nearly a century. The Construction Era was from 1822–1843, and the core structures were designed to establish a permanent and unified visual footprint for what was then Washington College. Washington Hall was built first in 1824 by master builders John Jordan and Samuel Darst, called the \"Center Building\" establishing the campus's Classical style. Its design was heavily influenced by Thomas Jefferson's Roman and Greek Revival aesthetics. The center building of the colonnade was named Washington Hall to honor George Washington, whose crucial 1796 financial endowment of $20,000 in James River Canal stock rescued the struggling academy from bankruptcy. A historic wooden statue of George Washington, affectionately nicknamed \"Old George,\" was placed atop the building's cupola in 1844. To protect it from weathering and to preserve it, the original wooden statue was retired from the rooftop and is now safely displayed inside the building's lobby. Payne Hall built in 1830 directly to the south, originally served as the college \"Lyceum,\" housing classrooms and the school's early library collections. Chavis Hall was erected in 1841 to the north to mirror Payne Hall, creating a perfectly balanced central trio. Originally called Robinson Hall, it was later renamed to honor John Chavis, the university's first African American student. The name \"The Colonnade\" emerged as the individual wooden porches and white columns of each separate building were stylistically unified and connected by a shared walkway. As the university grew, Newcomb Hall, originally a Late Victorian style building was built in 1882 south of the colonnade. Newcomb Hall was significantly modified in 1909 to match the uniform Greek Revival brick and column appearance of Washington Hall. In the 1890s the Old Tucker Hall Law school building was built north of the colonnade. It burned early in the morning of December 16, 1934. The building of the new Tucker Hall Law school building was begun in 1935. A durable replica now stands in its place on top of the cupola. Due to the colonnade's preservation and architectural harmony, the front campus alignment was officially designated a National Historic Landmark District in 1972.","The Cyrus Hall McCormick statue was placed and unveiled on the front lawn of the Washington and Lee University campus on September 25, 1931.
