It provided educational opportunities, funded educational scholarships and donations to local and regional charities and non-profits, and recognized people in the medical field with awards. It also had a doctor-patient grievance resolution service and advocated for different health and safety initiatives. In 2004, the academy began Project Access to create a network of physicians to treat low-income patients at no cost.
