Most are originals, but some photocopies are included.","The Legal/Governmental Documents Series includes summonses, road documents, juror lists, delivery bonds, papers from the Sheriff's Office and the Circuit Courts of Rockingham and Shenandoah Counties, CSA Telegraph Reports, postal accounts, and miscellaneous other official reports, claims, applications, etc.","The Business/Institutional Documents Series includes church histories and other church documents, school catalogs, slave purchase documents, records of Cootes' Store, and other miscellaneous business papers which are not related to families, such as the merger of the News Register Co. and Rockingham Publishing Co. Significantly the collection includes a complete issue of the Rockingham Weekly Register from April 26, 1828, that is not extant elsewhere.","The Individual/Family Documents Series contains deeds and indentures; letters; receipts; promissory notes and other financial papers, including those related to family businesses; certificates; and miscellaneous other documents. Strasburg, VA: GP Hammond Publishing, 1995.","The Hedrick family has been a part of the Elkton community for many generations. During the French and Indian War, a George Hedrick was listed as an Augusta County soldier [later Rockingham County]. During the Civil War, a George W. Hedrick and C.L Hedrick served in the River Rangers, a Confederate cavalry from East Rockingham County, while an H.C. Hedrick served under Company A, 3rd Battalion, Virginia Reserves.","The collection was subject to a large-scale renumbering project and assigned a new collection number in April 2019. The collection was formerly assigned collection number SC 4043. The arrangement of the collection was also simplified in April 2019. Two account books and a wedding gift record book were digitized in 2008-2009, and the original material was returned to the donor. Miscellaneous documents were also digitized and originally placed in series 5: \"Digitized Materials;\" That series has been dissolved, and the digitized content is integrated with the rest of the paper documents in the finding aid.","The Hedrick Family Papers, 1870-1959, is comprised of legal documents, financial documents, correspondence, ephemera and digitized account books.","Legal documents include a large number of summonses addressed to George W. Hedrick to appear before Rockingham County Court. The second folder includes documents pertaining to tax and tax collection. Some examples include receipts for paid taxes from both Rockingham County and the Commonwealth of Virginia. Of particular interest is a signed letter from former governor Harry Flood Byrd to Mr. Hedrick discussing new tax policy in 1927. Personal financial documents include bank notes from Rockingham Bank and the First National Bank of Harrisonburg, promissory notes involving the harvesting of wheat crops, and a document regarding the Stonewall Road Board in 1900 that itemizes equipment and labor costs to be reimbursed to James C. Hedrick. Receipts from locations such as the Wetzel Seed Company, the United Wool Grower's Association, Shenandoah Valley Livestock Sales, and the Rockingham Petroleum Cooperative are also represented. Correspondence consists of letters and envelopes, several of which contain unique stamps and cancellations. Most of the correspondence in this series is personal and usually between cousins, brothers, sisters, and friends. Miscellaneous, 1892-1922, consists of three publications and handwritten documents describing the establishment of a Reform Church of McGaheysville, campaign business cards for the office of Commissioner of the Revenue for Plains District, and a certificate of promotion for James Hedrick from \"B\" class to \"A\" class of second grade from 1905. One of the church publications is an abstract of acts and proceedings of the Reformed Church in the United States published by the Quenzel Printing House in Martinsburg, W.Va. in 1892. The other two items are 1919 and 1922 annual reports of the Reformed Church of the U.S., representing St. Michael's Frieden's, Brown Memorial, and Island Ford Churches.","The collection also includes digitized material. Two accounting books belonging to C.L. Hedrick and George W. Hedrick, as well as a list of wedding gifts for Mr. and Mrs. John H. Sipe were scanned and returned to the donor. The \"Miscellaneous\" digitized items in this collection also have been photocopied and these copies are in the collection, including 19th Century letters and envelopes, a 1889 promissory note from George W. Hedrick to Abner Shacklett for $210.00, and a 1932 \"Get Well Soon\" card from Maud R. Lemley to Mrs. Annie Hedrick. Newspaper clippings from the Twin City Sentinel in Winston-Salem, NC regarding Pastor Dr. W. H. Heatwole (1948-2006) was an artist, woodcarver, tour guide, local historian and folklorist. After serving in the U.S. Marine Corps and working at the Library of Congress, Heatwole moved to Dayton in 1974 with his wife, Miriam. Throughout his lifetime he sat on various committees and boards related to both art and history, and received many awards for his work. He chaired the Rockingham County Bicentennial Committee and in 1991 he was the first Virginian to display art in the National Capital Rotunda. Heatwole also authored several books relating to superstitions, folkways, and the Civil War. The collection is arranged topically into three folders: General Valley Documents, Page County Documents, and Recipes.","General Valley Documents, 1802-1901, include arrest warrants, summonses, orders for the seizure of goods for non-payment of debt, legal receipts, tax receipts, and business letterheads Individual items are chronologically arranged and described to the item level as per the donor's explanatory notes. Documents related to the Zigler Family of Timberville have been placed at the front of the folder and consist of five receipts of muster fines and orders granting private entertainment to John or David Zigler, 1828-1850.","Page County Documents, 1854-1879, contain various court documents summonses, treasury receipts, handwritten receipts, and orders for the seizure of goods for non-payment of debt. Individual items are arranged chronologically.","Recipes, undated, consist of two handwritten and two printed recipes for herbal cures and a recipe for making gunpowder. One recipe, printed in Pennsylvania Dutch or a variation of German, gives steps for curing a \"mad dog bite\" (i.e. rabies). A second recipe, also written in Pennsylvania Dutch, describes an incantation against sties. Men of Mark: and representative citizens of Harrisonburg and Rockingham County, Virginia.  Staunton: The McClure Company, Inc., 1943.","William Harpine Bowman was born on August 26, 1833 in Shenandoah County, Virginia. George Bowman, his first ancestor in Virginia, built the old Bowman homestead, called Fort Bowman or Harmony Hall, at Cedar Creek near Strasburg in 1751. After marrying Emily Frances Huffman, born January 25, 1837, in Harrisonburg, William Bowman settled in Peach Grove, Virginia, in Rockingham County, just southeast of Harrisonburg. There, he was involved in community affairs and served as the treasurer and possibly as the president of the Undine Lodge, where he also worked to support a community effort to purchase a stove for the New Union School in 1857. He further served his community by acting as a Justice of the Peace in the Ashby Township, Rockingham County, from 1870-1872.","Packaged in a large envelope on which was written: \"From Dorice Graham from her great Uncle Ott Minnich. Donated [as a] collection of old papers from the collection. Bowman Papers, 1856-1897, consist of 334 items arranged in three series: Financial Papers, 1850s-1890s, Judgments and Warrants, 1870-1872, and Personal Papers, undated.","Series 1: Financial Papers, 1850-1890, is arranged in five folders. The first four folders detail the years from 1850-1890 and are primarily made up of receipts, purchase and debt payment notices, and tax forms. Earlier documents from the 1850s and 1860s include information on slaves owned by Bowman and his land holdings. Also included are subscriptions to the  Old Commonwealth ,  Rockingham Register , and  Harrisonburg Free Press  newspapers, along with orders to the Atlantic and Virginia Fertilizing Company for \"EUREKA\" Ammoniated Super-Phosphate Fertilizer. A March 8, 1890 receipt details a payment of three dollars for tuition paid to the Shenandoah Normal College and fire insurance purchased for one thousand one hundred twenty-five dollars from the Rockingham Home Mutual Fire Insurance Company on May 1, 1890. Of particular note is a July 17, 1897 purchase for a headstone for William Bowman by Annie Bowman. The final folder in this series consists of medical bills for such items as pain management and a prescription for Bowman's wife.","Series 2: Judgments and Warrants, 1870-1872, is divided into two folders of documents from Bowman's tenure as Justice of the Peace. The first folder contains items from 1870, the large majority of which are addressed to Rockingham County constables with orders to summon various individuals for hearings. The second folder spans the years of 1871-1872. Summons to court once more are the greater part of the folder but judgments commanding individuals to pay debts within an allotted time period are also included.","Series 3: Personal Papers, undated, is comprised of four items. Of interest is a letter from the Shenandoah Normal School principal, G.W. Hoenshel, dated February 15, 1891, with information concerning tuition and room and board expenses along with a brief description of the school and the date of the beginning of the spring term.
