Harrisonburg, Va.: Custom Printing, 2014.","Several complete and thorough genealogies have been written about the Henkel family and their contributions as doctors, printers, entrepreneurs, millers, and religious leaders. As such, this biographical note does not serve as an exhaustive rehashing of previous scholarship. Researchers are encouraged to review published secondary sources for additional information on the Henkel family.","The Henkel Family of Virginia's Shenandoah Valley descends from Rev. Paul Henkel (1754-1825) and Elizabeth Henkel (d. 1843). Siram Peter Henkel, who along with his immediate family is primarily documented in this collection, was the fifth child of Dr. Solomon Henkel (1777-1847) and Rebecca Miller Henkel (1780-1854) and grandson of Rev. Paul Henkel.","Siram was born March 16, 1809 in New Market, Virginia. In an attempt to follow in his father's footsteps, Siram attended, but did not complete, medical school at the University of Pennsylvania. He married Margaret Koiner (variously spelled Coiner) Henkel (1820-1899) of Augusta County, Virginia on June 30, 1835. The couple settled at \"The Plains\" – located between New Market and Timberville – in September 1835 and their thirteen children, many of whom are also documented in this collection, were born and raised there. Siram farmed various crops and also operated a store and mill at The Plains. The Plains Mill was erected between 1847 and 1849 under the direction of Siram and his father Solomon, prior to his death in August 1847.","During the American Civil War, two of Siram and Margeret's sons served for the Confederacy. Lewis Philip (1837-1904) served in the Ordance Department of the Confederate Army. Around 1863, Lewis became a member of Co. H (Valley Rangers) of the 10th Virginia Cavalry. Luther Melanchton (1841-1919) was also a member of the Confederate Army and wrote home to his father from various camps. Lewis and Luther's brother Samuel Augustus (1840-1885) was exempt from military duty due to medical reasons. He became epileptic after sustaining injuries from run-away horses in 1855.","In 1878, one year prior to Siram's death, he sketched the plans for a new house at Plains Mill. The house was built in 1882 and served as the residence for Siram's widow, Margaret, until her death in 1899. The aforementioned sketch and photographs of the completed house are found in this collection.","Heleah Margaret Henkel, daughter of Siram and Margaret Henkel, married William M. Renalds in 1893. Freeman, SD: Pine Hill Press, 1974.","Anna Pearl Haldeman Stickley (1892-1991) was born to Jacob Shem Haldeman and Anna Metz Haldeman at Evandale, near Winchester, Virginia. She matriculated at the State Normal and Industrial School at Harrisonburg in 1909 and graduated in 1912 after completing the kindergarten training curriculum. During her time at the Harrisonburg Normal School, Pearl was a member of the Pinquet Tennis Club, Senior Basketball Team, Glee Club, Kindergarten Club, Lee Literary Society and YWCA, serving as its secretary from 1911-1912. Pearl married Claude Benjamin Stickley in 1921. She received her M.A. from Columbia University and was a teacher and librarian. She was an active alumni and returned to campus many times after graduation as is documented in this collection. Pearl's sister, Emily Haldeman Beck, and sister-in-law, Marguerite Goodman Haldeman, also graduated from the State Normal School.","The Pearl Haldeman Stickley Papers, 1910-1962 (bulk 1910-1915), document Stickley's time as a student at and alumni of the State Normal and Industrial School for Women at Harrisonburg.","Two scrapbooks, referred to by Pearl as a Memory Book and Good Times Book respectively, include concert and recital programs, theater programs including Shakespeare performances by the Coburn Players, commencement programs, student handbooks, program and report cards, cards and letters, invitations, ticket stubs, napkins, materials related to the Harrisonburg Presbyterian Church, newspaper clippings, and other assorted ephemera. Many of the items are annotated with funny musings by Pearl. Some of the printed ephemera is from Winchester, Pearl's hometown, and likely documents events she attended while visiting friends or family while a student in Harrisonburg and also after she returned home after graduation. Programs from the Fort Loudon Seminary and Empire Theater are included.","Items of interest include a list of senior class privileges dated October 23, 1911, located in the 1910-1912 scrapbook. Additionally, the 1912-1914 scrapbook, which post-dates Pearl's graduation and primarily documents as an alumni, includes a shard of glass from the bottle that was used to christen Dormitory No. 1 in June 1913. This christening was part of the ceremony changing the name of Dormitory No. 1 to Burruss Hall. Julian Burruss objected to the name, asserting that campus buildings should not be named honorifically after a living person, and the dorm was named Jackson Hall in 1918. This same scrapbook includes a program documenting the June 8, 1914 laying of the corner stone for the Student's Building (Harrison Hall). Pearl noted in her scrapbook that the sun was particularly hot that day, but attendees were not allowed to wear hats or hold parasols. Pearl returned to campus in 1915 and, as a representative of the class of 1912, gave her personal reminiscences as part of the June 7 Alumnae Banquet. The banquet program and Pearl's speech are included. Materials related to Pearl's involvement in the Women's Christian Temperance Union (WCTU), including her membership card, are also located in the 1912-1914 scrapbook.","A folder of loose ephemera comprises photographs (including a portrait photograph of Pearl Haldeman Stickley), correspondence, event programs, and other sundry ephemera.","Four copies of The Schoolma'am, 1910-1913, were removed and added to Special Collections yearbook holdings. During her time as a student, Quarles was active in student organizations, extracurricular activities, and extramural sports. Specifically, Quarles was a member of Pi Kappa Sigma, Athletic Association, Cotillion Dance Club, Mercury Club, YWCA, and Field Hockey (Blue Ridge Hockey Tournament). She exhibited leadership as Dormitory President, Sportsleader, Recreation Leader, and Sophomore Class Sergeant-at-Arms. Quarles graduated in 1957 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Education. She went on to teach health and physical education at several Virginia high schools including Harrisonburg High School (HHS). Quarles taught at HHS from 1966 until her retirement in 1989. She is a member of the HHS Hall of Fame due to her outstanding contributions as a coach of numerous girls sports.","After Quarles retired from teaching and coaching, she entered Eastern Mennonite Seminary in Harrisonburg and went on to serve as a pastor at Linville United Church of Christ and St. Stephen's United Church of Christ in Harrisonburg.","Per the inscription in the inside cover, the 1953-2007 scrapbook was donated by Tresa Quarles.
