Trent was born on September 26, 1904. A native of Northfolk, West Virginia, Trent attended Bluefield Junior College in Bluefield, Virginia, where he earned a two-year academic diploma in 1925. In 1930 and 1931 he earned a BS and an MS in Electrical Engineering at Virginia Polytechnic Institute (now Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University). In 1935 and 1936 he earned BS and MME degrees in Mechanical Engineering at VPI. Trent was appointed an assistant professor at VPI in 1931, teaching at first in the Department of Mathematics. In 1932 he was sent to Bluefield to organize the VPI Engineering Branch School in cooperation with Bluefield College. He served as head of the Branch School for eleven years. He returned to VPI campus in 1943, where he remained until his retirement in 1973, teaching both electrical and mechanical engineering.","Trent played an active role in the history of the Virginia Section of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) from 1945 until his death in 1991. Among his personal activities, Perkins maintained memberships in the Wythe County Historical Society and the Train Collectors Association. Also within the series are several pieces of correspondence between Robert L. Humphrey of Galax, Virginia and his sisters Mamie and Belle, together with some other Humphrey family-related papers. Also prevalent within the series are a number of bills of lading issued to G. W. Plumer, a Massachusetts merchant, and a set of telegrams between members of the Snidow-Dixon family in West Virginia and Southwest Virginia. A few freight bills issued to General G. C. Included in this small series are materials that relate to Perkins' personal life, though most of them are also connected to his hobbies. Another report is a study on surface coal mining, also known as mountaintop removal mining. His papers provide insight on the coal mining and railway industries in the mid- to late twentieth century.","William F. Drumeller, Jr., was born January 23, 1923, to William and Elizabeth Drumeller. Studying as a civil engineer, Drumeller attended Virginia Polytechnic Institute as a cadet from 1942-1943 and 1946-1949, taking a leave of absence in 1943 to fight in the U. S. Army during World War II, rising to the rank of Sergeant and earning a Purple Heart and Bronze Star. He worked as a civil engineer with CSX Railway.
