On 1 July 1952, the city of Hampton became greatly enlarged by a merger with Elizabeth City County and the town of Phoebus. The county and town thereby became extinct. Hampton takes its name from the Hampton Creek. It was established by an act of assembly in 1680. It was incorporated as a town in 1849, 1852 and 1887.
