Kitch attended the University of California, Berkeley and San Francisco Stage College, earning degrees in English Literature and Drama. At the same time he was appointed Associate Professor of World Literature at San Francisco State College, teaching modern continental drama, and coordinator and advisor to San Quentin Prison's all-convict Drama Workshop where he conducted directing workshops and served as Acting Coach. In 1966, he joined John Hancock at the Pittsburgh Playhouse as Production Manager and Director, and later assumed the role of Associate Director of the Circle in the Square production of  A Midsummer Night's Dream . He joined Arena Stage in 1967 as Associate Director, where his initial responsibility was serving as administrative coordinator of the capital funds campaign for planning and construction of the Arena II, later Kreeger, theatre.
