Betsy and Harry purchased the Springfield Independent newspaper in 1959 and Betsy purchased the Burke Herald in 1977, one year after Harry's death. Betsy would go on to sell both publications to the Alexandria Gazette Corporation in 1979, but would retain ownership of the Fairfax Newsletter until her death on April 9, 1981 at the age of 62.
