He was a director of local chapters of the Davis Memorial Goodwill Industries, the United Negro College Fund, and the National Conference of Christians and Jews, served on the board of the Alexandria Library, and was a member of the Westminster Presbyterian Church. It predecessors date back to the late 18th century. The paper reports on local news and was especially active in reporting events surrounding the Civil War (1861-1865). Its political affiliations have led to numerous instances of press supression throughout its history.","The newspaper was formally published as  Alexandria Gazette  in 1834 by Edgar Snowden.
