Heatwole (1948-2006) was an artist, woodcarver, tour guide, local historian and folklorist. After serving in the U.S. Marine Corps and working at the Library of Congress, Heatwole moved to Dayton in 1974 with his wife, Miriam. Throughout his lifetime he sat on various committees and boards related to both art and history, and received many awards for his work. He chaired the Rockingham County Bicentennial Committee and in 1991 he was the first Virginian to display art in the National Capital Rotunda. Heatwole also authored several books relating to superstitions, folkways, and the Civil War. Documents related to the Zigler Family of Timberville have been placed at the front of the folder and consist of five receipts of muster fines and orders granting private entertainment to John or David Zigler, 1828-1850.","Page County Documents, 1854-1879, contain various court documents summonses, treasury receipts, handwritten receipts, and orders for the seizure of goods for non-payment of debt. Thompson, born in 1874 and died in 1932, lived in the Harrisonburg and Rockingham County area where he operated a small farm. His wife was Elizabeth F. Thompson who was born in 1872 and died in 1958. They had five children, one of which was Mary Anna Thompson, who lived from 1903 to 1997. John W. Thompson and other Thompson family members were involved in the purchase of land for the Mt. Zion Brethren Church of Dayton, Virginia around 1895 and the later sale of the church and land around 1945. ","Mary A. Thompson (1903-1997) spent her life in the Harrisonburg area. She went to Pleasant Hill Elementary and Junior High School and then to Dayton High School, graduating in 1925. Thompson and his wife Elizabeth F. Thompson. These materials include notebooks of various household income and expenses from the years 1935 - 1974, including lists of purchases for gasoline and various auto parts from several different stores including Wayne Motor Sales, Standard Oil Co., and Madrid Fil[l]ing Station. Other materials comprise a notebook of church council meeting minutes and legal documents from the Mt. Zion Brethren Church of Dayton, Virginia from 1895 - 1945, various financial and legal papers from 1892 - 1932 that include fire insurance appraisals and policies for the farm, tax receipts, estate debts, land deeds, and a 1930 Farm Census.","Other materials within the collection relate to Mary A. Thompson, daughter of John and Elizabeth Thompson, from the years 1921 - 1945. These papers include temporary nursing permits and a letter from the principal of Dayton High School. He was born in Zurich, Switzerland. He first settled in America around 1700 in the province of Pennsylvania. He then migrated to Virginia and settled about 4 miles west of Luray. His descendants figured prominently in the life of the region. Abraham is credited as being the ancestor of most of the Stricklers in Shenandoah County.","This collection was minimally reprocessed in May 2017 and renamed Mr. and Mrs. James Hoover Collection of Strickler Family Papers, a change from Mr. and Mrs. James Hoover Collection. There are scattered documents relevant to related families, especially the Civil War correspondence of the Kauffmans, but the bulk of the collection documents parts of the lives of two Mary Stricklers (1860s, 1907-1940s); Joseph and Joseph T. Strickler (1810-1856, 1890s); and Baptist Elder Reuben T. Strickler (1854-1937).
