He died May 8, 1877. In 1818 he was still, residing in Powhatan County, Virginia and probably completed his schooling sometime after 1824. He married Mary Hill Cheatham on April 18, 1833 in Chesterfield County, Virginia and the two had four children. At the time of the 1860 Census, Gustavus Depp had enslaved 30 persons.
