He was a colonel of the 24th Virginia Infantry. Rose to lieutenant-general and was defeated at Winchester, Fishers Hill, and Cedar Creek. He was employed by the Louisiana lottery and practiced law in Lynchburg. Wrote A Memoir of the Last Year of the War for Independence in the Confederate States of America (1866). He remained unreconstructed and died on 2 March 1894.
