Halsey remained in the Windsor area and worked as a farmer and leather tanner. He married four times: to Abigail Allyn (1784-1816); to Laura Wolcott Mather (1789-1831); to Eunice Talcott (1787-1858); and to Amanda Moore (1807-1880), and he fathered eight children. Henry Halsey died on February 24, 1876.","The guide to the Henry Halsey Account Book, Ms1978-011 by Special Collections and University Archives, Virginia Tech, is licensed under a CC0 (https://creativecommons.org/share-your-work/public-domain/cc0/).","The processing and description of the Henry Halsey Account Book commenced and was completed in May 2011.","This collection consists of a single account book, maintained by Henry Halsey, a tanner and farmer in Windsor, Connecticut. The ledger contains various types of entries. The greater part of the entries are in the form of a day book, commencing on November 27, 1846 and ending on December 25, 1860. Entries include dates, customer names, descriptions of transactions, and prices. The transaction descriptions indicate that Halsey was conducting other businesses in conjunction with the tannery. Also included in the volume are lists of stocks and bonds owned by Halsey and account entries for services rendered to various individuals, including as administrator of the estate of Abial Wilson. Several newspaper clippings have been affixed to the end papers. Jacob Morgan is listed among the directors of the Fire Insurance Company of Alexandria, Va. in 1816 and served as its president in 1820. Jacob Morgan was a member of Alexandria's city council, representing the 2nd ward, in 1817-1818. Jacob Morgan  was appointed justice of the peace by President Monroe in 1819. Latter-day labels on the new bindings, however, indicate that the ledgers originated with stores operated by Francis Armistead and a succession of business partners. The day book spanning 1838-1839 bears the name Tompkins, Armistead and Diggs, while the 1850-1852 volume is labeled \"F. A. \u0026 Co.\" On the front endpaper of the 1869-1874 day book is written \"A \u0026 M [Armistead \u0026 Marchants?].\" The text of an 1845 deed, found online, identifies Francis Armistead and Albert Diggs as the surviving partners in the firm of Tompkins, Armistead and Diggs. Francis Armistead appears in the 1860 census as a 50-year-old merchant, living in Mathews Court House, Virginia; he appears again in the 1870 and 1880 censuses with  the same occupation.
